Mamma6 Posted October 16, 2017 Share Posted October 16, 2017 Hello, I am exploring Gattegno Math to introduce to all of my children, grades 2,4,7,9. I am looking for any guidance on using this system, pros & cons. Also, can I start them on it so late in the game for my 7 and 9th graders? We will be new to C-rods. Also, is it just an add on curriculum to use with a main curriculum, or is it stand alone. We are usuing Singapore now for 2&4 , Rodd & Staff for 7, and Math U See for 9th, wondered if Gattegno is anything like Math U See. Thank you for any advice. Thanks so much! MeaganS Posted October 17, 2017 Share Posted October 17, 2017 I don't think you'll find many who have. Most who I've seen use it do so for early elementary and usually as a supplement. Mamma6 Posted October 19, 2017 Author Share Posted October 19, 2017 Thank you for your responses, I know the Gattegno math has 5 math text books, as well as Algebra and Geometery after textbook 5, I was assuming it went at least to grade 5 or 6. fralala Posted October 19, 2017 Share Posted October 19, 2017 I'd say that although the rods can be used for advanced topics, it's hard for me to convince my kids to use them once they've got a strong conceptual grasp or the ability to think through problems abstractly. (And I guess there's no reason to do so except I think the rods are SO cool.) I would just say from my own experience not to spend any money, if possible, on rod books for your older kids. My oldest just pretended to use the rods to complete the assignments until she thought I wasn't looking. (At which point, I said she could solve them any way she wanted.) Google rod activities for whatever topics they're working on in their other curricula, or pay them to work through Gattegno's activities with the little kids (because handling the rods is helpful at any age). Can it stand alone? Yes, in my opinion, but like any curriculum-- it really depends on how successfully you see your kids learning from it. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I may grab the first book for my youngest with the rods, test it out and see how we feel. My 2cnd and 9th graders are the ones that need more help, they are both very visual. I am interested in Gattegno also because the creator Caleb Gattegno seems like a brillliant man, speaking 40 languages and pioneering several programs the way that he did. I plan to read up more on him and learn more about his techniques, just because they are so interesting!
