Space opera for kids?

Recommended Posts

Has she read any sci fi ... like Tripods or Wrinkle? Has she read the Heinlein Juvies? The Rolling Stones, Farmer in the Sky, Rocketship Galileo ? David Brin's Uplift ... you could start Pern with Nerilka which is geared younger. Barsoom or Lensman can be fun.

I am basing "space opera" on the definition of: "grand epic adventures that involve space flight, other planets, aliens, and the stories that arise from that". :)

Here are a few space opera sci-fi ideas:

Zita the Space Girl -- and sequels (Hatke) -- graphic novels at a grade 3-5 level

- Akiko on the Planet Smoo (Crilley) -- at a grade 3-7 level

- The Missing series: Found; Sent; Sabotaged (Haddix) -- at a grade 4-8 level

Lucky Starr series (Asimov) -- gr. 6 or 7+ level

A Tale of Time City (Jones) --  gr. 5-8 level; deals with different dimensions and time travel

- The Homeward Bounders (Jones) -- gr. 5-8 level; deals with different dimensions

Daniel Coldstar series (Pavlou) -- middle school level; to be published in Nov. 2017

And here are some other sci-fi titles at a grade 4-6 reading level, but that fall into other sub-genres of sci-fi:

Wonderful Flight to the Mushroom Planet; Stowaway to the Mushroom Planet (Cameron) -- charming child-sized space ship and planetoid without being "cutesy" -- grade 3-6 reading level

- The Iron Giant (Hughes) -- sci-fi on Earth with an alien robot

- The True Meaning of Smekday (Rex) -- sci-fi on Earth with an alien

- My Teacher is an Alien (Coville) -- sci-fi set on earth with an alien

- Whales on Stilts (Anderson) -- sci-fi on Earth

- Eager; Eager's Nephew (Fox) -- sci-fi on future Earth

- The Green Book (Walsh) -- humans traveling to a new planet, but not space opera

- A Wrinkle in Time (L'Engle) -- realistic with fantasy and sci-fi elements

- Enchantress from the Stars (Engdahl) -- sci-fi AND fantasy in one

- The Search for Wondla (di Terlizzi) -- not space opera, but set on a different world; gr. 5-8 level
