I know that one has been discussed a ton so definitely search in the search box for it because there are a lot of threads about it.  I personally haven't used it though.  I came close at one point but chose Build Your Library instead and I love it so that ended my search.  Good luck!

We've used it.  I didn't use a package. I bought individual literature units for books I thought my 12yo son would be interested in.  He had a blast that year.  It really did have just the right amount of writing and projects for him, but we also took about 6 weeks per book, and I'm not sure if that's the recommended time for each.  Because we didn't use a package I can't attest to their scope/sequence for writing development and language arts, but I would definitely use the lit units for my youngest.  I don't want to use their younger packages, though.  The subjects are more integrated and I want to keep our subjects the way they are.

Here are a few...

Ds is in his 3rd year of using the complete language arts. Dd is in her first year. They are very different learners, but both like it. Compared to what is typical around here, there is more writing expected at an earlier age, and the intensive grammar is held off a bit longer. We don’t do lots of writing in other subjects, so this is fine for us. The reading is somewhat advanced. My oldest has enjoyed all of the books except the American Heroes book in the 7-9 Level. For most of them, he asks for other books by the same author and quickly devours them as well. Both kids get really into their final projects and display a great sense of pride in what they’ve produced.

There are placement tests, which I highly recommend using. They say writing ability should be the main focus in placement. I agree with that as long as the child doesn’t have any reading problems. Placing a child with a very high reading level in a lower level based on writing ability shouldn’t be a problem, generally speaking. We haven’t used any of the science or social studies units. Do you have specific questions on the la 7-9 through 9-11?

ETA try adding a tag to the thread to see if more links pop up

I got a science unit and I am underwhelmed by it. It is a lot of output compared to input. I knew the writing level was high but I was planning to scribe but it really is light on books for a topic and heavy on worksheets. I preferred the BYL unit we did which was heavier on books and the work seemed less like busy work.

Yes I was worried about it being heavy on the worksheets. It seems like they have plenty of books for the year though. Maybe not in depth enough ?

I actually just ordered one mbtp language arts workbook and reader for my sixth grader off rainbow to try it out. Maybe he might like it. Who knows.

I got a literature unit last year and liked it, but overall it didn't work for us. It required a lot of work and I was unwilling to give up my other lit/grammar/ and writing choices. I think for language arts it would be good if you want to use one program. It's too much as a supplement, though. If I'd used it first and didn't have all the other stuff already, I could see us using at least the literature package for several years.

I agree with Paige - it's pretty full as a LA program, so you wouldn't think it was worth it if you were committed to using other grammar and composition. We used it as our sole LA (aside from spelling) from 9-11 to 12-14. I did cut out some of the activities, and most of the final projects , but the composition IMO is really great. The writing projects are nicely scaffolded, with the exception of just a couple that seemed to expect too much all at once (like the sea turtle research paper in the middle of reading The View from Saturday). The grammar is "light" but useful. The book selections are excellent. MBtP units are meant to take 3 weeks each, but some books like The Book Thief and The Hobbit had a LOT of reading each day to keep the pace, while others like A Single Shard had just a little reading since the book was short. The units can be done out of order, so pick one or two for books you want to read anyway, and try them out.

MBtP was designed for gifted kids - but every gifted kid I know could read & comprehend well before they could write well. MBtP is backwards - the writing is challenging when the reading is grade-level. 7-9 was annoying for my youngest - the books were tiny but the writing was appropriate for him. Now he's in 9-11 and the writing is still a challenge while the reading is still easy.

I don't like the science or SS. Too much work and not enough content, IMO.
