Thanks, Arcadia.

I realize October is the worst month for wildfires, but have there been any reports of causes for any of these fires?  Any suspected arson?  I think I read that PG&E lines were responsible for some, but can't recall where I read that.

I think I read that PG&E lines were responsible for some, but can't recall where I read that.

It hasn’t been confirmed but suspected that downed power lines and blown transformers started some fires.

“NAPA/ SONOMA COUNTY (KTVU) - Firefighters in Napa and Sonoma Counties called in more than a dozen reports of downed power lines, live wires, and blown transformers in just the first three hours after devastating wildfires erupted in the North Bay, according to dispatch audio reviewed by 2 Investigates.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. responded to questions about its power system in a statement Wednesday, saying 75 mph winds and dry vegetation contributed to some trees and debris “impacting†electric lines. The cause of the fires, which had claimed nearly two dozen lives as of Wednesday night, is still under investigation.

According to dispatch audio between fire crews in the first few hours of the firefight, multiple spot fires erupted near the sites of down power lines and fallen trees.â€

http://www.ktvu.com/news/dispatch-calls-link-pge-power-lines-to-north-bay-wild-fires-cause-still-under-investigation

“In all, according to a review of emergency radio traffic by the Bay Area News Group, Sonoma County dispatchers sent out fire crews to at least 10 different locations across the county over a 90-minute period starting at 9:22 pm to respond to 911 calls and other reports of sparking wires and problems with the county’s electrical system amid high winds.â€

Yes, according to PG&E, many of their poles and transformers went down in the intense winds on Sunday night. Apparently they had been keeping the lines clear of tree limbs and so forth, but did indicate their was a lot of new undergrowth due to the wet spring.

I haven't heard of any confirmed arson.

I just talked to SIL in West Santa Rosa. If you want to post or PM me what corner your family is in, I may know something as SIL gave me a run down on where the danger zones are.

The encouraging news was that the wind is not as strong as originally predicted.

In the Bennet Valley area, firefighters did a successful back burn (but did not notify people and some residents were really scared) and seem to be holding that line.

The Oakmont area is still evacuated as the fire is on the hill but has not reached the lower Oakmont community.

Sent you a PM. Thanks. :)

Marin county schools (all of them!) are closed tomorrow.

Some of the public schools might be mobilized as evacuation shelters. Some private schools are staying open tomorrow.

“Message from Marin County Schools Superintendent Mary Jane Burke

More than 1,000 Marin school employees live in the northern counties affected by the wildfires. We know that our community resources are being stretched including the ability of staff to report to work as well as the emotional stress on people impacted by the fires directly or indirectly.

School related sports activities countywide have been canceled through the weekend as a result of poor air quality. Advice from the Marin County Public Health Officer is for people to remain indoors with limited physical exertion.

Several school sites throughout the county have been identified and are prepared to serve as evacuation shelters tomorrow and potentially into the future if needed.

College of Marin and Dominican University of California will also be closed on Friday.

Schools will plan to return to normal operations on Monday.â€

A ton of my kids' teachers have been out this week. About 1/3. They either had to evacuate or need to be home in case of evacuation. I don't think there's enough subs to keep the schools running.

And air quality is WRETCHED. They have to worry about all of the asthmatic kids, plus keeping kids indoors all day long is not easy or fun.

I don't blame them.

SFSU closed from 5pm through the weekend.

“Evening classes canceled today; University closed Oct. 13-15

Additionally, the main campus, the downtown campus and the Romberg Tiburon campus will close effective 8 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 13 and will remain closed through Sunday, Oct. 15, with the exception of the Mashouf Wellness Center, residential life, dining services and essential personnel. I don't blame them.

I agree. This news quoted below is so sad.

“The Marin Professional Firefighters, International Association of Firefighters Local 1775 launched an online fundraiser Wednesday after learning a handful of firefighters serving Marin County lost not only homes but family members.

“There are some firefighters who have had loved ones perish throughout the firestorm,†said John Bagala, vice president of Marin Professional Firefighters and a retired Marinwood fire captain.

Bagala said 50 Marin firefighters are among the group’s nearly 400 members living in the active fire zones in Sonoma and Napa counties.

“So far, four of those have lost their homes and many more are threatened,†he said.â€

In the same news

“The homes of two Novato Police Department employees were destroyed and 15 workers were evacuated from their homes. One officer was forced to evacuate his Santa Rosa family three times from different dwellings before reporting for a mid-week graveyard shift.

...

The Novato Police Officers Association set up a fund through Redwood Credit Union to help employees who lost homes. Checks can be made to “Novato Police Association,†with the memo, “employee fire relief†and account reference: “@0159 Nova. Sh.â€

...

Of the more than 180 members making up Santa Rosa Firefighters, IAFF Local 1401, about 100 live in the fire zone. Fourteen of those firefighters lost homes this week.

...

Marin County Undersheriff Mike Ridgway said one sheriff’s department employee lost a home.

A Novato firefighter also lost his home but continued battling blazes, said Novato fire Battalion Chief Gerald McCarthy.

...

Mill Valley on Tuesday launched a crowd-funding site to support Mill Valley fire Chief Tom Welch — who lost his home — and other employees affected by the fires. By Wednesday afternoon, nearly $70,000 had been raised through the youcaring.com fundraiser.

Sausalito police Chief John Rohrbacher said some employees who live in Sonoma and Napa counties had been evacuated, but they did not know the status of their homes because they had not been allowed back into their neighborhoods.

...

San Rafael’s city offices were filled with empty desks on Monday; 85 employees live in Napa and Sonoma counties, according to staff. About 50 employees were absent the day after the fires ignited.

About 1,000 school employees of Marin’s public schools commute from Sonoma, Napa and Solano counties, said Mary Jane Burke, county superintendent of schools.

“On Monday, we had about 460 who could not report to work,†she said. “And the bottom line is that we’re collaborating among our school districts.â€â€œ

One of my cousins and her DH are in the process of moving to Napa.  Their stuff is in the hands of the moving company, but they won't deliver, until the air at the destination is better, for their workers.  They are staying in a motel near Lake Tahoe temporarily, farther from the smoke and filthy air.

Brighter news, the number of missing people went down.

“6:25 a.m. Number of missing declines as some of the 25,000 Sonoma County evacuees reunited: The number of missing persons reports in Sonoma County has hit 1,100, but 745 of those people have been found safe, leaving 355 still unaccounted for, said Sonoma County Sheriff Deputy Brandon Jones.

“That number keeps flying up. We’re really excited about that,†Jones said Friday morning, referring to the number of people reunited with their loved ones. “A lot of these people have been safe and sound this whole time. It was just finding where they were.â€

Of around 25,000 displaced residents in the county, 3,172 people are staying in shelters, Jones said. Major hits to cell phone infrastructure and service delays have hindered communication between displaced residents and their worried relatives and friends.â€

Yesterday seems to have been a good day in the firefight. We're hearing from a lot of people who left, and a lot of people who stayed, and all seem to be in pretty good spirits, feeling optimistic as the wind was not as bad as predicted yesterday. Now attention focuses to tonight and Saturday. Let's hope the predicted wind gusting does *not* happen. They could lose all their gains in one night if nature takes over. It's supposed to be windy, then dry and hot for a couple of days, but we might even be lucky enough to have rain in our forecast by midweek next week. We will be doing rain dances!!!

Mendocino County Redwood Valley just had a 4.0 earthquake and the death toll is now 35.

“The quake, first reported as a 3.7 magnitude quake by the U.S. Geological Survey, was quickly upgraded to a 4.0 magnitude tremor.

The quake was centered near Redwood Valley, the exact area where 34,000 acres have been burned since Sunday.

...

The earthquake was incredibly shallow, at less than a third of a mile, which means there is less distance to attenuate its impacts, and according to USGS was likely felt all the way from Fort Bragg on the coast clear across to the Central Valley, and down to Cloverdale.“

Lake County Long Fire (New) update

“Edited on Saturday October 14th, 2017 7:18am

Advisory:

Update Regarding Fire in Spring Valley Area

On October 14th, 2017 shortly before 5am a wildland fire was reported in the area of the Spring Valley Community in Clearlake Oaks. The residents of Spring Valley are currently under a shelter in place order. The fire is currently burning west away from the Spring Valley Community. Several fire units are on scene fighting the fire.â€

https://local.nixle.com/alert/6206919/

“A fire that started burning in Lake County during the predawn hours prompted a round of evacuations, fire officials said.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office issued a mandatory evacuation order for all residents in the Spring Valley and New Long Valley areas at 5:23 a.m.

Dubbed the Long Fire, the blaze was 20 acres at 6 a.m. but had grown to 100 acres just 90 minutes later, according to Cal Fire.

The fire is burning off of Highway 20 and Long Valley Road, east of Clearlake Oaks, according to Cal Fire.â€

“Just after 9 a.m., Lt. Corey Paulich of the Lake County Sheriff's Office issued an alert saying Spring Valley was no longer in immediate danger from the fire, but that residents should be ready to leave with little notice.

"Residents of Spring Valley as well as residents located to the west of New Long Valley Road to Highway 53 are currently under an evacuation advisory," the alert said. "It is anticipated that New Long Valley Road will be reduced to one way controlled traffic for most of the day."

The situation is quite serious today. The stories coming out about what has already happened are heatbreaking... people who had no warning and could not escape... but it not over.

90,000 people have fled the North Bay area.

I am not in an affected county, but everyone I know is doing something to help our neighbors in the hills. Business owners, churches, nurses, neighbors... the outpouring of support is astounding.

But prayers are needed today. May there be no further loss.

Re: the Healdsburg/Geyserville/Alexander Valley evacuation posts from yesterday afternoon: they caused a lot of stress and concern for folks, because the mandatory evacuation notice was unclear - it said Northern Geyserville, but then listed locations that are south of Geyserville, between Geyserville and Healdsburg. At the same time evacuation advisories were put out (by the city) for the north part of Healdsburg. It seems like a lot of people who were still in town fled at that point.

It looks like the Pocket Fire expanded a lot last night, but not into populated areas as of yet. The big worry today continues to be the wind: if they can hold the fire at Geysers Road and keep it out of Alexander Valley that will be good. If the wind pushes it past the fire line, there will be a whole lot more devastation.

They've got some containment on the Tubbs fire, but it's still burning hard toward Sonoma Valley and those folks are still very much in harm's way.

After today, wind is supposed to die down, but it will then get hot for a few days. Starting Wednesday night, there is a chance of showers in the forecast. That's what we need more than anything - the wind to die down, and some rain to fall.

My parents were awakened this early morning by the sound of bullhorns ordering everyone to evacuate immediately.

Did they leave? Bullhorns are the safest option now to get people out as phone, cell and internet access are still unstable.

For the fire near the city of Sonoma

“12:30 p.m.

State fire officials say they halted a wind-driven run of flames spreading into the city of Sonoma.

Deputy state fire director Dave Teter said Saturday that a minimal number of structures were burned, but that no further damage was expected after firefighters stopped the advancing blaze.â€

“An estimated 3,000 residents of east Santa Rosa and at least 250 people in Sonoma were ordered out as flames from the Nuns Fire bore down on their homes

...

Some houses were lost in the area around Wood Valley and Lovall roads before firefighters could get there. Three homes burned to the ground just a half mile east of the Sonoma town square on Castle Road. At one home, flames shot skyward from an open gas main. A charred truck sat nearby.

Just a few blocks away, on Half Moon Street, several houses burned.â€

My parents were awakened this early morning by the sound of bullhorns ordering everyone to evacuate immediately. They've already had a long day watching endless fire bombers fly over the direction of their neighbourhood.

Oh, I'm so sorry. Things are not going as well in the south and east parts of the county. There have been structures burned in Sonoma, I understand. I hope your folks are ok.

FEMA assistance information

“Napa County Residents May Register for Disaster Assistance

Survivors who primarily reside in Napa and Sonoma counties can apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by phone at 800-621-3362 or (TTY) 800-462-7585. Applicants who use 711 or Video Relay Service may call 800-621-3362. The toll-free numbers are open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Applicants will be asked for the following information:

Social Security number

Address of the damaged primary residence

Description of the damage

Information about insurance coverage

A current contact telephone number

An address where they can receive mail

Bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit of funds

Disaster assistance for homeowners and renters may include grants to help pay for:

Temporary housing

Essential home repairs

Uninsured and underinsured personal property losses

Other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.

Low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are available for businesses of all sizes (including landlords), private non-profit organizations, homeowners and renters. Disaster loans cover losses not fully compensated by insurance or other recoveries.

FEMA grants do not have to be repaid. FEMA assistance is nontaxable and will not affect eligibility for Social Security, Medicaid or other federal benefits.

Registering with FEMA is required for federal aid, even if a survivor has registered with another disaster-relief organization, such as the American Red Cross.

Survivors should register even if they have insurance. FEMA cannot duplicate insurance payments, but underinsured applicants may receive help after their claims have been settled.

The amendment also adds Orange and Solano counties for Categories A and B and direct federal assistance under the FEMA Public Assistance program. This program is available to the eligible state, local and tribal governments and certain private nonprofit organizations, on a cost-share basis, for debris removal (Category A) and emergency protective measures taken to save lives and protect property (Category B). Butte, Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Nevada, Orange, Solano, Sonoma, and Yuba counties are also eligible for Categories A and B and direct federal assistance under the Public Assistance program.“

@Arcadia    Do you have any information on Napa? My cousin and her DH are in the process of moving there. Their stuff is in the possession of the moving company, but they won't deliver until the air there is better for their workers.  They are staying in a motel in the Lake Tahoe area, temporarily, where the air is better. TIA

The most up to date source has been the Napa County Facebook page. It is a public page, no Facebook account needed. https://www.facebook.com/NapaCounty/

Napa complex fire map updated 9:40pm yesterday http://www.countyofnapa.org/2017NapaFireComplex/StatusMap/

You can check air quality by zip code here but I don’t know how accurate it is. The link is using downtown Napa’s zip code but you can key in any zip code at the box on top middle area.

Is your cousin moving to the City of Napa or Napa County? There is no evacuation for the city of Napa.

The city’s Facebook page is this and no Facebook account needed to view https://m.facebook.com/cityofnapa/

I think to the city but I am not positive.  I had copied what you'd written previously and pasted that into emails. Her reply:  "Very good info ... Thank you"

My thanks to you too!

Yes. SIL just texted that the winds have whipped up again and are fanning the flames.
