I am not in an affected county, but everyone I know is doing something to help our neighbors in the hills. Business owners, churches, nurses, neighbors... the outpouring of support is astounding.

There is a list on this link (http://sonomafireinfo.com/#/donate) for people who are looking for places to help.

“Our community is so grateful for all the donations of supplies for evacuees that have poured in this past week. Our local evacuation center at SVHS is now fully stocked - thank you!! We're hearing from lots of folks interested in bringing in donations so we wanted to share a list of needs that we came across. Phones numbers are included so we suggest you call first before delivering your donations. (And if you are aware of other resources for donors, feel free to add them in the comments). Thanks for supporting Sonoma County with such generosity through this very difficult time!

Any idea when they will have these under control?

The expected full containment for Tubbs, Pocket, Nuns and Oakmont fires is October 20th, 2017.

“In a countywide update, the state agency showed the Tubbs Fire 50 percent contained, the Pocket and Nuns fires 15 percent contained, and the Oakmont Fire, east of Highway 12 near Oakmont, 10 percent contained. Cal Fire is expecting full containment of all four fires by Oct. 20â€

Sonoma County Sheriff Office update

“The County of Sonoma has begun the process of assessing evacuated areas of the unincorporated county for damage. This is a necessary and important process as it allows the County to determine what dangers may/may not be present and what repairs may/may not be needed before evacuation orders are lifted.

In short, it's a step closer to moving our displaced residents back home !!!

During this process, Permits and Resources Management Department (Permit Sonoma) Employees will be in the evacuated zones. Their vehicles will display the Sonoma County Seal and the Employees themselves will be displaying prominent County Identification Cards.

Any citizen who encounters a Permit Sonoma Employee and questions their identification is encouraged to call Sheriff's Dispatch 707-565-2121 and we will confirm their identification.

While we appreciate the diligent efforts our citizens all over the County displayed to help thwart looting, we do need to ensure that Permit Sonoma Employees are able to safely conduct their inspections.

Damage Assessment is one step closer to recovery !!!â€

https://www.facebook.com/sonoma.sheriff/

On looting

Yesterday

“This evening diligent Deputies patroling Boyes Hot Springs area of Sonoma contacted suspicious subjects "cruising" the area.

The subjects, a 21 year old male from San Rafael, a 32 year old male from Oakland and a 26 year old female from San Francisco were ultimately arrested for outstanding warrants and multiple narcotic violations.

As you can see from the photo, this group was certainly up to no good! Together with our allied agencies, we will continue to keep our communities safe!â€

Thursday

“This afternoon Sonoma Deputies and personnel from outside agencies responded to simultaneous calls of a theft from a car and a fight at a park.

Deputies got to the park and detained Morgan Plumere of Sonoma. After some investigation we learned that Plumere had been seen taking a pair of sunglasses out of a car in an evacuation area. One neighbor called 911 while another neighbor followed Plumere to the park and confronted him.

At the park Deputies conducted a probation search of Plumere and his belongings. They located the missing glasses as well as items that had been previously reported stolen from a local vineyard management company. Plumere was also in possession of an emergency fire shelter that appeared to have been taken from an out of county Fire Department that had responded to assist with the fire.

Plumere was arrested for Looting, Possession of stolen property, Possession of drug paraphernalia, Possession of prescription medications without a prescription and Violation of probationâ€

City of Napa update

“Good morning, Napa! Well the predictions were right… it is a little smoky again in the City of Napa. Don’t you worry though, the fires immediately around the City of Napa are not getting worse and our amazing partners in the fire service are still in the area. The weather and winds changed so our moment of clear air is gone for a while. Mask up and stay safe! https://airnow.gov/index.cfm?action=airnow.local_city&zipcode=94559&submit=Go

Thanks for all of the support!â€

Napa County update

“NEW PROPERTY ACCESS REQUIREMENTS

*PLEASE NOTE*

We have made some changes to our property access process effective Sunday 10/15/17, see additional requirements in blue below.

Due to the presence of mandatory evacuation areas established related to the Napa County wildfires, growers, winery personnel, ranchers and other agricultural-related businesses will need prior approval from Incident Command personnel to conduct harvest or other ag activities within these areas. The Napa County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office is currently fielding requests from businesses requesting access into restricted areas. Please follow the guidelines below.

Be advised that according to CalFire officials, grapes that have been contacted by flame retardant are not safe for humans and should not be harvested.

Contact the Napa County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office at agcomfire@countyofnapa.org, by phone at 707-253-4357 or by fax at 707-253-4881. Please provide the following information:

Name of company

Contact name with phone number and e-mail

Type of activity requested

Specific location of property

Date and time access needed

Duration of time access needed

Approximate number of employees involve

This information will initially be reviewed by Ag Commissioner staff and conveyed to Incident Command. Incident Command personnel at the Napa Valley Expo will then make the determination if access to specific properties can be granted. Protection of people is the key consideration in granting access and will be made on a case by case basis. Due to the rapidly changing nature of the fires, requests can only be made within 48 hours of the time that access is required.â€

As of yesterday many evacuation advisories have been lifted, including ours, but we decided to spend one more day at the beach, as it's supposed to be 90 at home and the lack of winds, although excellent news for the firefight, means that the air quality will not be good. It's supposed to cool off each day and may even be raining by Thursday, so we'll plan to go home tomorrow, I think.

First the sad news :(

“8 a.m. Firefighter killed in tanker crash: A water tanker crashed on a winding Napa County road near where firefighters are battling the northern edge of the Nuns Fire, and the driver was killed, officials said.

The crash happened around 7 a.m. on Oakville Grade west of Highway 29 north of Yountville, California Highway Patrol officials said. The tanker was going downhill when it lost control, went down an embankment and overturned, the CHP said.â€

Then the brighter news

“6:20 a.m. Missing persons reports down to double digits in Sonoma County: Of the nearly 2,000 missing persons reports stemming from deadly wildfires in Sonoma County, only 99 of those reports remain outstanding, officials said Monday.

7:15 a.m. Firefighters making progress: The Atlas Fire is now 68 percent contained — up from 56 percent containment on Sunday. Over the past 24 hours, it grew in size by only 7 acres, to 51,064 acres.

“Firefighters continue to strengthen perimeter control lines, provide structure defense and engage in tactical patrol,†Cal Fire said in a statement. The Nuns / Adobe / Norbbom/ Pressley / Partrick Fires, at 48,627 acres, are now 50 percent contained, and the Tubbs Fire, at 36,390 acres, is 70 percent contained.“

“Marin techies offer Wine Country fire victims free help with data retrieval

Victims of the North Bay fires who believe they may have lost pictures, videos or important documents on their scorched computers or smart phones can get help from a Novato data recovery company for free.

DriveSavers has recovered data from storage devices that have been destroyed by natural disasters, including Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Katrina, Southern California fires and the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

...

“These fires have literally hit home for us,†said Scott Moyer, DriveSavers president. “With a third of our employees living in Sonoma or Napa counties, many have been displaced or had to evacuate. Some have tragically lost their homes. One of the fires is just 10 miles away.â€

Fire victims need to contact DriveSavers no later than Nov. 15 by calling 800-440-1904. There is a limit of one device per business or household. DriveSavers will accept as many devices that it can, but it might limit the number of free recoveries based on workload, cost of parts and availability of personnel.

Customers in need of additional recoveries — and those with multi-disk devices — are eligible for a 50 percent discount.â€

A graphic novelist who lost his Santa Rosa home to the fire drew an 18 page comic

“When he lost his home to fire, Brian Fies started drawing

The 18-page comic he created, “A Fire Story,†is published, for now, as a post on his blog, http://brianfies.blogspot.com. It describes the couple’s evacuation, detailing decisions they made about what to take and where to go. It takes an ominous turn when he returns alone, bypassing police roadblocks on foot, to see how their house has fared.â€

http://www.sfgate.com/art/article/When-he-lost-his-home-to-fire-Brian-Fies-started-12282021.php#photo-14358383

“It's much less polished than my usual work, but that's part of the point. Writing, penciling and inking an 18-page comic like this would normally take me a few weeks. I did this over parts of four days using a bad brush pen and art supplies from Target--Sharpie pens, highlighters and crummy paper--because Target was the only open store I could find within 20 miles.

It's a first-person report from the front line. They're not always pretty.

Page 9 has some profanity. Actually, it has nothing but profanity. Sorry. I wrestled with that, but that's exactly the way it happened and I am an honest reporter.â€

Volunteers with experience handling large animals are needed at the large animal evacuation center at the Solano County Fairgrounds, 900 Fairgrounds Drive in Vallejo.

Volunteers enter through the main gate at the Fairgrounds and are assigned a task based on their skill set and volunteer needs at the time. Shifts are four hours each and run from 6 a.m. – 10 a.m., 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., 2 p.m. – 6 p.m., 6 p.m. – 10 p.m., 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. and 2 a.m. – 6 a.m. Volunteers may also ask to be placed on a list to be called upon during future shifts should the need arise.

“If you’ve been looking for a way to get involved to help support those in our community who have been affected by the Atlas Fire, this is a good opportunity,†Hannigan says. “Come on down, we’ll take great care of you, feed you, and put you to work in areas that best match your interest and skillsets.â€

Volunteers must be 18 years or older. Children under 18 will not be admitted to the volunteer area even if accompanied by an adult. Bear Fire started last night in Santa Cruz mountains and evacuations are In placed.

“Cal Fire officials said the blaze on Bear Creek Canyon Road in unincorporated Santa Cruz County started as a house fire at around 10:30 p.m. Monday that spread to nearby vegetation.

By 4:30 a.m., the Bear Fire had grown to 125 acres and triggered evacuations for residents on Deer Creek Road, Rons Road, Dons Road, Lost Valley Road, Favre Ridge Road and Oak Ridge Road.

“We have access issues (to fight the fire),†said Assistant Cal Fire Chief Rob Sherman. “Its very steep, rugged terrain.â€

Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Department Officer Jim Ross said about 150 people had been evacuated by early Tuesday.

According to California Highway Patrol officials, an evacuation center is open at Boulder Creek Elementary School at 400 W. Lomond St. in Boulder Creek.

Authorities said several roads have been closed by the fire — Beatty Ridge Road, Favre Ridge Road, Bear Creek Road, Old Vineyard Road, Deer Creek Road, Skyline Ridge Road, Rambling Road, Hartman’s Creek Road, Sunset Ridge Road, Shear Creek Road, Grizzly Rock Road, Miller Ridge Road, most of Las Cumbres Road, and Knuth Road on the Santa Clara sideâ€

http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2017/10/17/house-fire-ignites-hillside-santa-cruz-mountain-homes-evacuated/

“At 5:15 a.m., Cal Fire told NBC Bay Area there are about 100 structures threatened. A Cal Fire official added that the steep, rugged terrain is creating difficulty battling the blaze.

ABC7 is reporting a rescue operation is underway after a firefighter fell down a ravine.“

ETA:

“As of Tuesday evening, the Bear Fire had burned 225 acres and destroyed four structures but caused no casualties beyond five firefighters who suffered minor to moderate injuries traversing the steep terrain. The latest official containment level was 5 percent.

Close to 600 firefighters worked Tuesday night to keep the fire from breaching its eastern flank at Lost Valley Road and maintain the three-quarter-mile buffer between that and the nearest homes along Favre Ridge. Evacuations were expected to continue at least into Wednesday.â€

Sorry. I wrestled with that, but that's exactly the way it happened and I am an honest reporter.â€

http://brianfies.blogspot.com

I posted that to my FB page last night. It made me cry.

My very dear friends live in Bear Creek. We need a break.

I agree. The first responders must be exhausted. Five firefighters were injured for Bear Fire. There is also a new fire at Mount Wilson Observatory (Angeles National Forest, SoCal).

“Of roughly 250 firefighters battling the Bear Fire, five firefighters, including an inmate firefighter, sustained moderate injuries, officials said.

The inmate firefighter was taken to a hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation, said Assistant Cal Fire Chief Rob Sherman. He was in stable condition.

Another firefighter on the hand crew fell 30 to 50 feet and suffered a possibly broken wrist and facial lacerations, said said Cal Fire Chief Rob Sherman.

Three more firefighters were evaluated but not transported after slipping in steep terrain, he said.“

“MOUNT WILSON (KABC) -- A small but growing fire burned near the historic Mount Wilson Observatory early Tuesday morning, chewing up heavy brush down the hillsides.

The blaze, which broke out shortly before 4 a.m., burned along the hills above Altadena, Arcadia and Pasadena.

Officials said the observatory has been evacuated and the fire is not burning near foothill residences.

The fire had charred approximately 25 acres, Los Angeles County fire officials said. There was no containment.â€

Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital re-opened and interesting info about the hospital’s six vast underground water tanks.

“Beginning Tuesday morning, Sutter Santa Rosa will again offer full inpatient and emergency care services. Elective procedures will resume at a later date.

To re-open, the hospital had to undergo a thorough cleaning and pass inspections by both the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development and the California Department of Public Health.

“To prepare the hospital for re-opening wasn’t an easy task,†said Jeff Gerard, president of Sutter Health Bay Area. “So many of our team members were affected by the fire—at least 60 lost their homes—yet we are committed to re-open the hospital on Tuesday.

...

Hospital’s Well Water System Saves Hospital, Continues to Aid Firefighters

Firefighters were able to access the hospital’s six vast underground water tanks. Sutter Santa Rosa was built with its own well water system, separate from the city’s water system, to protect the hospital against disasters and support sustainability. To date, firefighters have used more than 500,000 gallons from the hospital’s supply to battle the wildfires.

Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation Clinic Status

In addition to the hospital, numerous clinics were forced to close by the inferno, including 13 medical clinics operated by Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation. Ten of these 13, along with Sutter Walk-In Care in Petaluma, have since re-opened. For a complete list of open and closed clinics and surgery centers, see https://www.sutterhealth.org/for-patients/community-alert.â€

Sutter's new hospital is right down the street from us. I drove by there today. Two sides of the intersection that were housing tracts, utterly flattened, nothing left but burnt hulks of cars. the apartment complex on the 3rd corner also burned but it stopped there. And it came up to the hospital parking lot and burned some of the classroom wing at the adjacent Luther Burbank Center. We've been on mandatory evacuation for a week and this is my 2nd day waiting to get the gas back on, but thankfully containment numbers are rising, more than 5,000 fire fighters are on the job all around northern CA, and rain is predicted for Thursday. Even 1/2" will really, really help.

Sonoma Sheriff’s update on Facebook an hour ago about controlled back burns.

“Now that the sun is going down, Sonoma County Fire/EMS Dispatch (REDCOM) has been receiving 911 calls reporting fires seen in the vicinity of existing fires.

Controlled Back burns were utilized during the daytime today to further control existing fires and these Back burns may be visible, creating the visage that new fires have started. As of 8:21 PM, no new fires have been started.

Controlled Back burns were conducted in the following approximate areas:

Pocket Fire - North to Northeast of existing fire.

Tubbs Fire - Far East border, near Sonoma/Napa County line.

Oakmont Fire - In the vicinity of Hood Mountain Regional Park between Oakmont and Nuns Fire (likely visible from Oakmont Community).

Nuns - Far east side of Nuns Fire (likely visible from Napa County).

Containment is up across the board on all Sonoma County area fires !!! The Sheriff's Office would like to acknowledge the hard work and effort displayed by all Firefighters working the various Wine Country Fires. We owe you all a debt we can never repay.â€

And the Luther Burbank Center, where my girls do theater. We literally helped build that little theater. It was their second home. :crying:

Looks like the theatre is okay from today’s news report.

“The center’s main building, which includes the Ruth Finley Person Theatre, Lytton Rancheria Lobby, the Carston Cabaret and Fireside Room, box office area and conference rooms “remain intact,†but performances and events such as the Clover Sonoma Family Fun Series presentation of “Go, Dog. Go!†and an anniversary party for Latino 95.5 featuring headliner Yandel originally set for last week, were canceled.â€

http://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/Luther-Burbank-Center-damaged-by-fire-remains-12271248.php

From the same article

“The Luther Burbank Center for the Arts in Santa Rosa will remain closed through Nov. 5 after being damaged by the Wine Country fires that continue to ravage the North Bay.

The center, which has served as an entertainment hub to the community for more than 30 years, sustained fire damage to about 30,000 square feet of its 140,000-square foot campus, according to officials. Areas such as its schools, workshop space and the pavilion tent, as well as landscaping and irrigation, “appear to be damaged.â€

But as of Monday, Oct. 16, employees have been able to return to the campus to work with “authorities, municipal professionals, structural engineers and an environmental mitigation team to determine the safety of the Center and the surrounding environs in order to establish a timeline to resume operations and performances,†said Julie Richter in a statement on behalf of the center.â€

Yes!! The theater still stands. There is some damage, but not horrible. We're so happy! And so sad for Anova, the school for autistic kids right next to our theater that was completely destroyed.

We're home, and though we drove through brown sludge, I am currently seeing blue sky at our house! The air quality is pretty good right here, too, despite the fact that they've been setting a ton of controlled burn backfires up at the Pocket fire (just north of us) to try and get rid of the rest of the fuel in the fire zone. We're still really hoping for rain tomorrow.

More good news; more evacuations lifted, Sonoma State University has reopened, and expected full containment of the fires is this Friday :)

“â€We still have backfire operations going on,†he said. “I understand they are concerned but our fire operations (are what) they are seeing.â€

The Tubbs Fire was 91 percent contained. The Atlas, Nuns and Pocket fires were at 83 percent, 80 percent and 63 percent containment respectively, Cal Fire said.

...

With continued progress, full containment — meaning the fires will no longer be able to spread — is expected for all Sonoma County wildfires by Friday, officials said.

“That’s still the goal. We’re on track for that,†Jones said. “We’re hoping we hit it.â€

Rain forecast to arrive in the area Thursday could help with that goal. Light rain is expected to arrive Thursday evening and likely continue into the night in the North Bay, National Weather Service forecaster Steve Anderson said. And there was a 30 percent chance of light rain in the Santa Cruz Mountains on Thursday night.

...

Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park reopened for classes on Wednesday, with free face masks for students.

After students asked what to do if the fires destroyed their homework, the university advised instructors to accept the excuse.

“Adjust your syllabus and review new deadlines and assignments with students,†the university said in a statement to faculty.“

We came home on Monday, a week after evacuation. Pleased and surprised to find power on and air decent inside house. Three more days before gas was restored and I was soooo happy when the guy came and made my stove and heater work!!

Yesterday they began letting people back into some of the worst burned areas. It's heartbreaking. And many of the wineries that lost power may have lost this year's fermentation as well as the grapes in the field. That has a very big impact on employment here. They're circulating a list of at least 175 local businesses whose owners lost homes in the fires. Over 50 local fire and police families lost homes while parents were serving and protecting. Local community college, more than 200 students and 60 faculty lost homes. It just goes on and on.

Fires have not yet reached full containment but are burning farther from people, thank God.

Next week's weather is predicted to go back up 30 deg. to the high 80s and low 90s. Praying that doesn't come with more high winds. I think everyone here is pretty nervous about the potential for even more fires breaking out if the wind kicks up.

When you drive past some of the burned areas it's amazing that anybody got out. I know of one guy that was running away from a wall of flame in his boxers when a police car found him.

The last casualty was a teenage girl whose younger brother had already died of burns. The parents are still in the hospital recovering from some very serious burn damage themselves.

Eyes forward now. Big current concern is the coming rain and runoff from all the toxic burn areas.

Wow, so those parents might still not know they've lost both their children? Unimaginable.

I don’t know but it is possible. Their family cars caught fire as they were trying to escape the fire at 1am. An aunt is fundraising for the expenses.

“Details are unclear, but Kai’s family — his father, mother and sister — apparently decided to try to escape the fire around 1 a.m. on Monday, said Mindi Ramos, an aunt who described the family’s plight on Generosity, a site being used to raise money for Kai’s remaining family members who were seriously injured by the fire.

After flames ignited the cars, the family fled on foot and apparently got separated. Kai was found dead in the driveway.†http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Kai-Shepherd-14-died-trying-to-outrun-Redwood-12277350.php
