G5052
My oldest has been talking about this since high school. He's a junior in college now with a major in accounting and a minor in business analytics. He's feeling like this is very much what he wants to do now. He loves his country and wants to help people. He's physically fit, comfortable using a weapon, and wants to work for the federal government after college. We know that he may deployed overseas and domestically and that his college may be disrupted for boot camp, training, and deployment. We have friends in the military and guard that he's lining up to discuss this before he sees a recruiter. This would also pay for his college and provide me with some for household expenses. I am very tight financially with DH and I separated. Of course I told him that shouldn't be a driver at all, but he's that kind of kid. Thoughts?
Dmmetler
My bonus kids' boyfriend is in the guard. Like your DS, he's a sensible, focused kid who sees it as a path to a goal and one that helps people. He's a criminal justice major and is an MP. I think it's a good option for the right kid.
Guest
Its very good for the right kid. The one we know found it very helpful in matching his life goals to his career goals. He dropped out, and eventually went active duty army. He is a much happier person, as his National Guard contacts lead to a good career match. G5052
Mine wants to go into an intelligence-related and/or government finance and strategic planning job, so yes, I see it as a win-win. But oh, my mama heart! His sister keeps teasing me about letting him go. He was homeschooled the whole way and is living at home and going to college. If he goes forward, he plans boot camp next summer if possible. So ten weeks! That will be just the start, of course.
Lanny
OP You might search, on WTM, but using google.com something like "welltrainedmind.com national guard and college" without the quote marks. I seem to recall Margeret in Colorado writing about one of her DC at the University of Wyoming is in the WY National Guard, or about students there who are in the WY Guard? and I believe their university expenses (or some of them) are paid for by the WY National Guard? That was probably a year or two ago or more, so I'm not sure, but I do remember reading a thread on WTM... Google around and you may find some interesting things.
