scootiepie
My kids and I just finished Science in the Beginning, and I have to say I loved it. However, I think I discovered this series too late. As much as I want to continue my oldest is in 6th grade and it is starting to seem a bit too baby-ish or young for him. He's not science oriented and while I liked the way the material is laid out in bite-sized chunks, I think he needs more challenging material to keep from being bored. I'm wondering if any has used these books for a young middle schooler? How do the later books in the series compare, with respect to content and challenge? Suggestions? I also have a 4th grader who enjoys science and I want to combine science as much as possible.
countrymum
Looking at the series it looks like the later 2 or 3 books are maybe harder?? So maybe skip ancient and go to a later book? I don't think you have to use them in order. I only have science in the beginning and was looking at samples of the next ones on exodus books, CBD, or While's website because it was seeming a bit over my 1st graders head as an oldest. I think he'd tag along just fine but it wasn't working at all for his little sister. The ancient world looked a little harder then the later ones said 4-6 instead of 1-6 so I decided to shelve it and try again in a year or 2.
SoCal_Bear
It actually isn't written baby-ish. I skipped SIB and went straight the other. I'm in my third year of teaching at my co-op. It's written at a upper elem/early middle school level. I think it depends on who is looking at it. I taught 2nd to 4th for Ancient World and 3-5 for Scientific Revolution and now 4-6 for Age of Reason. The review questions are set at 3 different levels. I used the middle level of questions the last two years for my students. I have had 6th graders in my classes the last two years and it was challenging enough. The topics though are more complex and engaging for an older student after Ancient World, so I would say jump in at Scientific Revolution. There are more chemistry and physics oriented discoveries which I think engage boys more. Edited October 3, 2017 by calbear
LindaOz
My 7th grade boy is doing the second book in the series on his own and he is really enjoying it. He has requested to do all the other books on the series too. I think that he is going to run out of time for that because he is most definitely going to need to start an older series in there somewhere. But, at this stage, he is enjoying and learning his science so I think we will go from book 2 to book 4 or 5 (when available) for 8th grade before moving on. I'm not feeling that he is missing out and I'm glad that he is enjoying and requesting more of these science books.
