EmilyGF
These are the complaints DS12 (a very analytical thinker) is lobbing at me. What should we do instead? He wants something meaty if I make him spend time on it. I'd like it to be efficient. Thanks, Emily
SilverMoon
Rod and Staff English 7 or 8. Or just let him test out of units until it's more challenging.
Kalmia
Susan Wise Bauer's Grammar Curriculum will be out soon. There are three books. It is instructor driven. https://smile.amazon.com/Grammar-Well-Trained-Mind-Instructor-Rhetoricians/dp/1945841028/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1506826993&sr=8-1&keywords=susan+wise+bauer+grammar https://smile.amazon.com/Grammar-Well-Trained-Mind-Workbook-Rhetoricians/dp/1945841044/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1506826993&sr=8-2&keywords=susan+wise+bauer+grammar https://smile.amazon.com/Grammar-Well-Trained-Mind-Workbook-Rhetoricians/dp/1945841060/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1506826993&sr=8-4&keywords=susan+wise+bauer+grammar Warriner's English Grammar and Composition First Course. A classic. Written to the student. You would probably have to have some grammar knowledge to correct as I don't know if teacher editions are available. https://smile.amazon.com/English-Grammar-Composition-First-Course/dp/0153119004/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1506827123&sr=1-2&keywords=warriners+english+grammar+and+composition+first+course Michael Clay Thompson Royal Fireworks Press. Includes Magic Lens loops which are problem solving with grammar. blondeviolin
We are using SWB's new grammar curric and loving it. It's fairly straight-forward and my oldest loves the interesting selections used in the workbook. You can preview the first six weeks for free. Penelope
Are you just on the first season? I do think the first third of the program is only review for kids who have been learning grammar for years. The second and third seasons are better. AG may not include a few topics that you would find in Rod and Staff or WTM Press new program (I actually am not sure, just judging from what I have read), but I did appreciate how streamlined it is and I do think it covers everything necessary to understand grammar and be able to correct writing mistakes.
Momto6inIN
You could speed it up. My very analytical STEM kid did the whole program in 1 year and while he never loved it, he admitted that it did the job with a minimum of fuss and time, which he did appreciate. He was also supremely motivated by the thought that if he aced it all I told him he would never have to do grammar again. JennyD
Is he getting everything correct? My DS12 is also complaining that AG is "boring" and that he "already knows this stuff," but you know, he's making a fair number of mistakes, so I disagree with the second part of his assessment. If he is acing it all, I would just let him test out of sections, like a PP suggested.
fourisenough
Definitely don't quit! Season one is pretty easy (especially if he has done grammar before with another program), but seasons two and three are much more challenging. Agreeing with another suggestion above to allow him to look at each new topic; if he thinks he knows it well, let him to jump right to the test. Miss Tick
In season 2 I'm alternating in weeks of Killgallon's Grammar for Middle School on the same topics. For my kids Killgallon adds a creative or interactive portion that they don't get from AG. We do it almost exclusively orally.
deerforest
My DD agreed a couple of years ago, and I opted to let her quit. She had already completed a fair bit of grammar. We now focus on writing and second language learning as methods for reinforcing grammar instead.
