SereneHome
Argghhh, the more I look at it, the more I want it. The only problem is - I already have WWE for LA and SOTW for history. We've done VERY little history so far and are still on SOTW1, even with my oldest, who seem to love Ancients right now I was looking at Book Shark Level 3 - year 1 of 2 american history and I really really want to get it. I was also thinking of getting their LA bc my oldest is still on WWE3 and is not going that great. But 1) - it is soooo much $$ and 2) I hate wasting stuff - if I already have perfectly good curriculum, why get more, right? Set me straight!!!!!!
Julie of KY
Love their books, but you could save money and skip their LA as many don't like it.
HomeAgain
What draws you to it? I have to say, Bookshark is put out by Sonlight, and Sonlight gets hammered for their LA. It's changed every year and doesn't provide a good, constant flow for the student.
SereneHome
I was mostly looking at history. I LOVE LOVE LOVE "books" based curriculum. And I was browsing around for something different for LA bc my oldest is having heck of a time with WWE3. He was doing great with WWE1 and WWE2, so I was looking for something to give him a break
prairiewindmomma
Just use the stack method, and check things out from the library. Most are readily available.
HomeAgain
Maybe something like Wayfarers would suit? Or Build Your Library? A quick search here should get you a few reviews on each. If you want a quick break, not a long one, I'd look at Moving Beyond The Page. You could get one unit on a book he would enjoy and take 4-6 weeks to go through a literature based language arts program.
SereneHome
Thanks So, is that a "no" on History??? Are you saying I shouldn't get it???? But I so so wanted it! :)
HomeAgain
Oh, get the history books. They're fabulous. But I can't say the same for their plans. I have Sonlight's American History out in the garage right now (core...D+E? I think). The planning is...okay. It's a tedious way to do each day, flipping through to find the questions for this or the activity for that. It's not something that is simple and easy to use. And I think it can be overwhelming if you're not expecting it. We have several of their literature selections on our shelf that we pull to use with our own programs. We do SOTW and I pick a read aloud and ds picks one to read to himself. When they're done, we pick another two books. It's a slower pace, but we don't like having so many books going at once.
prairiewindmomma
If you like Bookshark, also look at: Wayfarers Biblioplan History Odyssey I don't know that Bookshark's premium prices for their IGs is worth it. Clearly, something is causing you to hesitate....otherwise you would've purchased it already. Usually, that's finances--hence my suggestion to use the library instead.

And yes, I can see it getting old very fast - looking at the schedule each day/wk, etc. That's why I never liked History Odyssey.

...................
Just get the books that look the most interesting to you and read them aloud in more or less Chronological order. We were loaned that core and used it that way and it was wonderful. It is one of ten best SL Cores and I highly recommend most of the books. We cried and laughed and discussed. :) SL's teachers' notes and huge binders and schedules were always totally overwhelming and annoying to me and I'm Type A! They are absolutely toooo much. Reading and discussing the books will be lovely, no pressure.
Mavy
I am using Bookshark K and 3 this year, and we all love it. I have a newborn this year, and it has been the perfect amount of work, and I love having the schedule. However, I am not using the LA(because I liked what we already have).
SereneHome
Now there are threads about ELTL, which I also like.....
Ausmumof3
I think the thing with SL/book shark is ALLTHE BOOKS. I always want all those books. However you can use the library and book lists and a few resources to get the same result. Also it really bugs me that they use story of the world program so late. It's so good for the early primarily years so why wait till grade 5 or so to start it?
