Dmmetler
I just got a federal jury summons-to start reporting as of October 2. One week away. It would be annoying regardless, because homeschooling/driving a 12 yr old to outsourced classes doesn't count as an excuse, but yet would be extremely difficult to manage if I'm actually called to serve, but with one week's notice, it gets kind of hard to arrange backup plans (and I won't know until 5:00 PM the prior business day if I'm called for the next day or not). At least in the past I've had a month or more's notice to arrange stuff!
maize
Oh that is frustrating!
MBM
Can you not get out of it because you're a caretaker? Not sure how that works anymore. My husband finds out on Wednesday if he will be called to a criminal case that is expected to last 2.5 months. Ugh. We are called for jury selection almost every year yet others we know have never been called. Chicago is a large city so it's kind of strange how that works. Not that I mind serving because the cases are often interesting and I don't mind doing my civic duty but it is odd how people we know who have lived in Chicago for decades have never been called for jury selection even once. I've heard it's tied to driver's licenses but these people all drive. Still, you have my sympathy as far as arranging care for your girl. I hope it all goes smoothly for you. Arcadia
My husband rarely gets jury duty summons and he is exempted due to being a non-citizen. We do get two weeks notice so sometimes my husband drop by to the jury summons office instead of mailing back the card. USCIS is equally comical. We are renewing our green cards and our biometric appointment dates are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Each of us have a different date so we my husband would have to drive there three times if the office is rigid about appointments schedule. He can take paid time off for USCIS appointments including driving us there. No public busses go there :(
SparklyUnicorn
I once got that kind of notice for grand jury duty. I called and explained my situation and luckily they let me out.

Guest
Hey, my husband just got the same federal district court summons! It arrived in Friday's mail, and he has to start checking in October 2nd. Our big problem isn't the commitment, it's the distance. The federal courthouse is a 3 hour drive away from where we live. Ugh!
prairiewindmomma
I got summoned for October 2 also. Yay, Texas.

Is there distance exemptions for federal jury summons? We have only gotten state jury duty summons and there is a distance hardship exemption. Below quoted is for California. “The prospective juror must travel an excessive distance. Unless otherwise established by statute or local rule, an excessive distance is reasonable travel time that exceeds one-and-one-half hours from the prospective juror's home to the court.“ http://www.courts.ca.gov/cms/rules/index.cfm?title=two&linkid=rule2_1008

You are allowed to arrive the night before, and they will pay you a stipend for lodging.
Daria
She's over 10, which is where the "caretaker for a minor child" exemption stops. That's impressive that it lasts that long. Here the drop in daycare at the courthouse takes them from 8 weeks, so caregiving isn't considered an excuse if your child is older than that. They do let you choose an alternate date, however. Could you move it down the road?
MBM
Three hours? Ugh. For us it takes about 1.5 hours by car or public transportation to the criminal courts. I thought that was bad.
Kassia
Oh, that stinks. How stressful. I'm sorry. I've tried to get out of it before due to issues with my kids, but no luck. Makes me mad because there are plenty of people willing and available to do it and they choose to make it a hardship for others.

Rebel Yell
Will they let you reschedule and pick a date in the summer? I've done that.

Could you move it down the road? That is a good idea I guess. I have had several exemptions since my kids were born because i am a single parent and the daycares shut at 5. Oh and once my baby was less than a week old. They do offer funding for childcare but they obviously aren't aware that childcare doesn't work that way. Guest
My friend just got a federal summons and she couldn't get any sort of exemption despite the fact that she is sole caretaker for 5 minors, as well as their sole teacher, as well as not being able to put any of them into the federal daycare that was suggested to do being immunocompromised. The rules for federal are a lot different than state.

Liz CA
Got one as well for mid October though. I have the option of having it postponed. I am taking my chances. It is kind of sad that this service is looked upon always with such sighing and frustration - but for most of us it is inconvenient.
HSmomof2
I got one last year. I was able to get it postponed until summer by telling them we homeschool, and I was the primary educator for my children.
73349
She's over 10, which is where the "caretaker for a minor child" exemption stops. She's still subject to the compulsory education laws, though, so I would think the fact that she can't attend school would be compelling. Also, 10, wow. As the mom of a 9.5yo, I could not see leaving him home alone for 9+ hours a few months from now.
Dmmetler
I'm not going to request it be moved. I know that homeschooling doesn't count (or, at least, didn't when I was called when DD was 7). A month-long window in Summer really risks messing up some of DD's summer programs and conference travel, and in the school year October really isn't a horrible month because it's just the normal stuff. I do wish Uber didn't have "children must be accompanied by an adult" in their terms of service. DH works from home, and DD's pretty good at getting assignments done for outside classes. It's just a matter of getting her to the outside stuff.
Guest
You won't get an exemption here, because your dh works from home. I've seen judges presented with that scenario, and they tell the juror that a person working from home can shift their hours such that the chaeuffering of the student can be done without affecting the business. Good luck with not getting called and getting the slip giving you credit.
Ravin
We live in one of the areas where they've launched Uber Teen, but the kid has to be 13 to use it.
Bootsie
Is this a summons where there is a period of time over which you may be called? Like you call in every day for a week or call in once a week for a month? I had a friend who had a federal grand jury three hours away and his wife was dying with cancer and the judge would not excuse him.
Dmmetler
Daily for a month. I've been called four times previously (every 2-3 years) and never actually been selected to serve on a jury. In many ways, it would have been easier to be called in almost any prior time because I Child have just dropped DD off worn a friend for a day or two. Now she has at least 2 things a day outside of the house. Some can be skipped, some really shouldn't be. I wonder if she could call a regular taxi?
MBM
A former neighbor put her son in a taxi every day to go to his elementary school for deaf children. If you were to do that, you might want to get the same driver if possible. We also had driving services that would take kids to after school activities if parents couldn't. Not Uber, just something run by caretakers.
Bootsie
uggh--you have to put up with this not knowing every day for a month! Do you know what time you would have to report if you do have to go in? I have a friend who lives in an area where reporting time is 10:00am or 1:00pm which does give a bit of leeway in getting a child somewhere (where I live you have to be signed in by 8:00am so for many people that is leaving their house before 7:00am)
