Word roots suggestions

I'm eating humble pie here. I don't know how many times I've done this now. I don't realize the wisdom of doing a whole plate of curriculum, I cut stuff out, and then I regret my choices when my dc struggle.

I didn't appreciate the value of Latin/Greek until recently. I have a 14yo boy that is struggling with spelling and I would like to introduce more word roots to his studies so that he can associate words that he knows with new words that are related. I've also thought that roots would help him make more educated guesses for his spelling choices.

I also want a resource that won't brake the bank, isn't to immature but can be used with my younger dc later and will be a just get 'er down sort of resource. Even just a reference book that we could build a notebook from as we go through spelling words would probably be sufficient but maybe something more would be better.

So what's out there?

Vocab with Classical Roots books cover 2-4 roots each unit, with maybe 10-20 words using those roots. A unit has around 4 exercises, so you can do it over a week. There are 16 units/book, so you can finish one in a semester. We also have used the MCT books - we're currently on Caesar's English 1. My history-loving kid has really enjoyed those - he actually does both Classical Roots and MCT at the same time, although I'd be fine with either.

Free word root study and word root bingo:

http://www.thephonicspage.org/LangLessons/greeklatinroots.html

I would follow on with Marcia Henry’s Words for him, your others can use it later. It is usually cheapest from Pro-Ed, but is also available from Amazon, with shipping to Canada you may want to look around. It is a bit expensive but has a lot of info and a CD to print all the worksheets so it is non consumable. The earlier version with no CD is almost identical content wise, but you have to write out all the exercises yourself.

They all can play bingo together with whatever program you choose, it is easy to make your own bingo, just google “free to print bingo make your own,†there are a ton of options out there. I like the 4 x 4 grid where every student has every root every turn. It means there are sometimes ties, but then everyone learns more and stays engaged.

ETA: Words integrates spelling and word root study. The sample is from early on, it goes on to multisylable words, the last half is all 8th to 10th grade level work. They say up to 8th grade level but I think the words are a bit higher grade level than that, and some of my remedial middle school students have found the last few worksheets a bit too hard but high schoolers have not had too much trouble.

Her newest version of Words is cheaper than the old version on amazon.ca:

But it looks like it might be cheaper to buy and ship from Pro-Ed, they say they ship to Canada:

Thankfully we travel to the US a lot so I have the option of ordering any curriculum to a friends address in WA. It saves me so much money, even with the crummy exchange rate. Thank you for the Canadian shipping options though. I'm going to have to go shopping. :)

We really like using English From the Roots Up. We're making interactive notebooks, but it really can be as simple as just reading and reviewing the roots and the words that derive from those roots. It's in major need of a facelift, but the content is perfect for no-frills Latin and Greek roots.

With my much younger child I'm introducing roots gradually through notebooking with this resource I found on Teachers Pay Teachers....

There's a cheaper one out there I found AFTER I bought that one (has less roots though):

This one also looks interesting...
