Murphy101
Anyone care to PM chat with me about how a large family can rent in that area and home schooling questions I might have? We have avoided moving far longer than we probably should have due to finance and family, but we don't think we can avoid it any longer. I have a couple dozen questions.😎 Edited September 23, 2017 by Murphy101
emzhengjiu
I can't answer about renting for a large family, but there are many opportunities for homeschoolers in the DFW area. In Texas, homeschools are considered private schools. There's no reporting to anyone. I will say rents seem high to me now. A 2 bedroom apartment in a decent complex on the Dallas side of the metroplex is close to or well over $1,000 / month. The Fort Worth side, I've heard, is less expensive. Janeway
How close to Dallas do you need to be?
Murphy101
We are looking at the jobs being in Irving, but we know that we are likely facing a drive as far out as Denton or Waxahachie. For cost and traffic reasons, we would prefer further FtWorth than Dallas proper.

What do you mean by many opportunities? I see there's literally dozens of support groups and coops, but what about options for high schoolers to dual/concurrent enroll in community colleges or universities classroom courses? (Not interested in online programs.) How does that work?
emzhengjiu
In Dallas county, dual credit tuition at community colleges is waived for eligible high school students. That's not the case necessarily in other counties. I don't know about Fort Worth. My younger daughter is dual credit this year at our nearest community college. I've not investigated the universities in the area for dual credit opportunities.

Are you happy with the quality of instruction and the environment at her community college?
ErinE
We are looking at the jobs being in Irving, but we know that we are likely facing a drive as far out as Denton or Waxahachie. For cost and traffic reasons, we would prefer further FtWorth than Dallas proper. I would not recommend living in Waxahachie if the job is in Irving. The highway traffic is terrible and I grew up and worked in Houston so I know highways and commuting. Arlington to Roanoke to Frisco in an arc would be the max distance I'd look at houses. Further east and the driving becomes too much. Irving itself has some fairly inexpensive housing but crime is an issue. PM me if you have specific questions about the region. emzhengjiu
Check the websites for community colleges in the area where you may be moving. Eligibility requirements will be listed as well. I don't remember the specific scores, but SAT, PSAT, ACT, or TSI scores may be used to show readiness for college level work. Class quality differs but overall we been pleased.
