The Barkety Bark Bark Teachers Lounge 9-21-2017

Happy Thursday! The Lounge is now OPEN!

Today's theme stems from the fact that while I would like to have the patio door open in the mornings (now that the weather is

much cooler then!) my dog insists on barking at every person that walks by - which is usually our neighbors. We live in a small townhouse

community so this time of day many people are leaving for work. Why must she bark at every.single.person? Even when she knows them! Oi!

Do you have a barkety bark bark at your house? Here: see above. I should qualify this by saying she doesn't do it a mean or aggressive way

(she's a Sheltie mix - not a mean bone in her body) but she does seem to like barking at things outside!

Anyone want to live on bigger property? Here: me!  :seeya:  I'd love to live on acreage where I could send the kids out, and send the dog out!

If you have a dog, what breed is it? Here: ours is black and white Sheltie-border collie-Deutscher Mittlespitz mix. One of our cats gets along with her

and one doesn't.  :tongue_smilie:

Talk to me! :bigear:

Morning! Yes, we have to barkety bark barks. They have a very odd dynamic though. One, a beagle mix, does what yours does and barks at everyone she sees. The other, a Welsh Corgi, only barks at the beagle to tell her to shut up!! This only makes the beagle bark louder.

I would love some acreage, at least 1 but more would be wonderful too. We are currently in a townhouse and are preparing it to sell. I have been looking for a house with at least a acre in our price range for the last 6 months and haven't seen anything. All the houses in this area with an acre are ridiculously big wastes of space. I think the only way we'll get what we want is by buying a foreclosure.

No barking here, but plenty of howls!  The wind is something fierce in the treetops today, rushing about and making the timbers sway.  It's all gray out.  Fall is roaring in with a vengeance!

We are living on just enough land to suit us.  Around the house is about a cleared 1/2-1 acre, with a space for a lovely garden, patio, and fire pit while still allowing room to play.  Beyond that is another acre+ of woods belonging to this house and large buffers between neighbors of more woods.  There is a treehouse and trails and lots of things for a child to explore.  It's really nice.  I just wish it were ours in earnest and not a rental home.

There is a wish for a dog here, but there's also wishes for traveling and being a bit more free, so the dog situation will wait. Plus, I'm sure our neighbors would appreciate a fence if an animal did join us. My sister has a dog, a wee little thing, that barks at every person.  However, she is not barking to annoy.  She's barking to get their attention so she can run and get her ball for them to throw.

Yes, we have a barkety bark bark.  He's a Brittney named Andy.   Doesn't matter if the door is open, he'll bark if anyone pulls into the neighbors driveway, our driveway, or any funky noises.   If he's outside, he barks at everyone who walks by, especially if they are walking a dog.  Lots and lots of dogs in our neighborhood.

We like to leave the door open with the screen curtain down so the dog can run in and out on his own but right now it's too HOT.  We're getting temps in the high 80's and the humidity is oppressive.   We're running the AC non-stop and it's ridiculous for this time of year.

We do have an acre of land so we're not really looking for more (hard to find without $$$$ in NJ).  We really have only one neighbor that you can even see from our house, and one other that you can hear.  Our "front" door is actually in the back of our house overlooking a river (big hill going down) and the flat area of about 1/4 is fenced in for the dog and kids, although the kids are allowed outside the fence. ;)    The fence stops about 60 feet from the road so he isn't really that bothersome to people walking by. He's not getting close to them, he just is noisy.

He's our only non-tank pet.  We have a red albino corn snake, and ds is getting a betta fish once his fish tank set-up is done.

We have a dog and she and 1 of the neigbors dogs bark because their other dog barks. They never barked much until they got a new dog. They drive me crazy.

I would do anything to have acreage and privacy.

Our dog is some sort of austrailia. shepherd or sheltie mix. She is 13 years old and has 3 legs.

We don't have a dog. We have 2 outdoor cats who love for visitors to pet them. They do scratch at the doors and wake us up at night, though. Our front door frame is in such bad shape that I dread having to sell our house in a few years. It will be a struggle to know who much fixing up to do or just sell as is.

I would love more space. We are in a subdivision with 1/2 acre or so lot. We have 10 hours to look for a house when we moved here 13 years ago. We will never do that again. I've already told dh that we have to rent when we move next. I want time to think about it.

We did have dog 20 years ago, a German shepherd. We had to give him away when we were moving to a place we couldn't have him. He was in a fenced in yard, and I refuse to put a dog on a leash. We've not had a fenced in yard since that house, so no dog. I can't have animals inside because of sinus issues/allergy.

Living in the city, we teach our dogs not to bark. The only time we allow it is when the doorbell rings. Then they may alert us. But after we have opened the door, no more barking. We've done this with multiple dogs over the years.

We are down to one dog at the moment.

I had a Brittany. She wasn't much of a barker. I miss that dog so much.

The pooch is Yogi and he rarely barks. First, he's much too lazy. Second, he only cares about me. And I rarely give him any cause to bark. ;)

We're on half an acre. That's plenty for us. We own much more a few miles down the road but have no desire to live on/care for that much land. We let my nephew farm it.

Ours is an older Beagle mix. He'll be approximately 15 in October. He used to howl at everyone and every car. Now he reserves his barking for under the table at dinner. Last night we were up late because he had a seizure and was then wandering for an hour and a half. Thankfully this was the first seizure for 6 months so we're doing good.

I'd love to live on acreage. We've done townhouses and are currently in a house with a fenced backyard but since Rupert doesn't do stairs well and we have a poison oak problem I can't send anyone outside 😕

No barkety's here. My kids are trying to talk me into a goldfish (would that be a gulp-ety?) but I can hardly keep the humans in here alive and fed, lol, my hat is off to people who can take care of other creatures on top of it.

Bigger property?: only if someone else maintains it for me. I love the idea of more acreage, and grew up on a decent sized land next to then-unbuilt land. We ruled the desert and had "Ranger Town" and built all sorts of things. I'm slightly horrified at the idea of letting my 6 yo wander the desert now, tho, even with friends. I've been saying I'd do something with my 1/1024th (lol) acre backyard for the past 9 years, and it is still unfinished dirt. I'm just not a good steward of land right now, so my current situation is probably for the best.

We're also combatting the travel bug, and large property wouldn't jive.

Mine barks some, but his usual sound is more, "Wooo wooo." This is his normal "talking" noise. Hound mix. Very vocal! He does not really howl, thankfully. He barks when people come to the door or when another dog is in our yard. Both fine to do.

More land. Yes, but not too much more. We have 1/4 an acre. I'd like a whole acre or maybe one and a half.

We have nine barkety barkers here (major dog lovers, obviously  :) ).

two 3-month-old English lab pups (brother and sister - Oliver and Bluebell)

an Aussie/catahoula mix (Titan)

a white German shepherd/yellow lab mix (Twinkie)

a little old Jack Russell (Buttercup)

a Great Pyrenees mix (Gus)

a pit bull/lab mix (Tiberius)

a hound/lab mix (Beauregard)

and a mystery mutt named Thor whose parentage cannot be identified (though we're planning to do a doggy DNA test on him soon)

We live on 50 acres and have a few hundred more in other parts of the county.

Selkie, you have a small ZOO!

Well, tonight is kind of strange because kids don't have taekwondo. They usually have class on Thursday but graduation to the next

belt is on Friday this week and neither dh nor I want to drive there THREE nights this week (just went last night). Now trying to figure out

if I should try to spend time with hubby, go get some studying done, or what.

Barkety-bark is currently crashed out on our tile floor, so quiet, for the moment.

Barkety Bark Bark is named Bear (see profile pic.)  He was a super quiet dog when we got him 6 years ago, but in the last couple of years, he feels the need to tell us that Ron, the retired neighbor is doing yardwork, that a dog walked in front of  the house, that a kid is riding a bike, that a car slowed down in front of our house, that there are people talking outside.  God forbid the mailman come or someone set off fireworks.  If we don't pay attention to him he does his whisper bark, to get our attention, then he does his subvocalizing pre-bark that sounds like growling, but it is more "I'm fixin' to tell you something."  Then he does a single bark.  And if we still don't figure it out, he all out speaks ... "Ar RAR rar rar rar."  The real problem is that he thinks that everyone coming to our house is there to see him and he demands attention from our guests if we get down to our own business.  If you make a big fuss over him and how cute he is, he is satisfied.  Most of the time, he is pretty quiet as we live on a quiet street.  But nobody gets to sleep in when the corgi next door is out for her 7 am walk.

I really don't desire more land.  We live in suburbia and I am fine with that.  On occasion, I wish we had an area to set up a badminton net for outdoor entertaining and I'd love a bigger vegetable garden.

Breed:  Bear, the wonderchewer is a labradoodle - about 65 lbs.  He's likely a first gen, so he is not completely non-shedding.  He has that slender poodle build, but the lab personality.
