lea1
We are getting ready to go on a family trip, including visits to NYC and Boston. We are planning to stay just outside of these two cities, where we can take a quick train ride into the city. Would anyone be able to provide recommendations for safe areas to stay near these cities? Thanks!
3 ladybugs
How far out do you want to be? Are you going to have a car or do you need to be by the train station? I used to live in Cambridge, MA and I live in New Jersey. I have also lived in lower upstate NY. Personally, I wouldn't go too far out of town in either city if I were you. When I lived in Cambridge, the Red and the Green lines were very safe and you can easily stay off of either. I would stay in Cambridge but that is mainly because I know my way around there and love it there! New York I can't say I would be that helpful unless you wanted to be an hour outside. I have always lived that far from the city. It is reasonable train ride but I don't do it everyday (though I can't say the same for my neighbors as it is common from here). I would look to long island and Queens or Brooklyn. Sorry I can't help you more then that. Have fun on your trip!
lovinmyboys
We are going to stay in Staten Island. We got a hotel room for only $93 a night (several hotels had that price-hilton garden inn, comfort suites, etc). The hotel has a free shuttle to the ferry and the ferry is free. I have never done this before, but someone told me they did it and liked it.
hellen
I like to stay in the Meadowlands area and take the bus into Manhattan. The bus is fast and convenient.
lea1
How long does it take to take the bus from the Meadowlands? Also, how long does it take to take the ferry from Staten Island...that actually sounds like a really good option. Our primary objective for staying outside of the cities is cost so if we can find a reasonably price place as close in as possible, that would be great. I actually live in the Boston area for 4 years but it was a long time ago. I lived in Stoneham and Andover, each for one year, and on Beacon Hill for 2 years...but it was a very long time ago. I would love to be able to stay in the city, if we could find a place for a reasonable price but I seem to remember it being very expensive. On my most recent stay I was at the Holiday Inn on Paterson Plank road in Seacacus. It takes 25 minutes to get to Port Authority Bus terminal from there which is a few blocks away from Times Square. Google maps has a public transit option. It will tell you how long it takes to get wherever using ferry, bus, train, etc. It will tell you the bus or train number also but not the cost. Donna
I've stayed in Jersey City then taken the Path train into NYC. I've stayed in Boston a number of times and gotten a room or whole apartment through airbnb. Always have had nice experiences and it's nice to have an apartment with a kitchen to avoid having to buy every meal out.

slackermom
In the last couple of years, I have stayed in the Meadowlands area when visiting NYC with the family. Our base room rate was around $150 per night, with free parking. We have also found similar rates for tiny rooms in midtown NYC (without parking), but that is for when dh goes on his own, or when we went as a couple, without our dc. In the Boston area, we tend to use airbnb instead of hotels. Last summer we booked a 2 bedroom apartment in the neighborhood of West Roxbury, and paid a total of $600 including taxes, etc, for a 3 night stay. We were within walking distance of the commuter rail. My dad found an airbnb place in Brookline, which was convenient for getting around via the green line of the T. If I had to stay in a hotel outside of the city with family, I would probably choose Dedham, with access to the commuter rail.

I think I'd look in Secaucus (also on the PATH line). How far outside of Boston do you want to be? Framingham has affordable hotels. It's about 20-30 minutes depending on *where* in Boston you're heading (and that is not during rush hour). It would be good to stay near a "T" stop. Perhaps Allston or Brighton? But I don't know about hotel prices there... Edited September 21, 2017 by zaichiki
