JenneinCA
This morning at 7:15 am my daughter sends me a text message "What did it feel like when you sprained your ankle?" Eek! I told her it hurt. A lot. She said she could still walk on it and was going to her class at 8 am. It hurt but not that much. She finished class and it still hurt so she went to student health and found out that... it is a mild sprain. This parenting thing is hard when they are a long way from home! She will be fine but I am still a little stressed.

Arcadia
When I sprained my ankle in engineering school, the medical school students in my hostel would knock on my door to ask if they could look. Mine was a bad sprain (missed a step with a heavy backpack and that ankle was weaker to start with) and took three weeks. Hostel mates drove me to school and offered to get my laundry done for me. There was also only two engineering girls in the entire hostel so I do get pampered even without a sprain. I had actually passed the first aid proficiency test by Red Cross and being prone to accidents was already proficient at bandaging sprained ankles. It was kind of funny showing medics how to bandage ankles. Hope your daughter's ankle heals quickly with minimal swelling.
Lori D.
Oh dear! And I know her college campus is very spread out, requiring a lot of walking. She might check in with the Health Center to start a "paper trail" and to see if the campus might be able to provide an accommodation for the next week or so, of a staff member and a golf cart to take her down to classes in the morning and back to her dorm in the afternoon. Hugs. Hope she heals up quick!

GoodGrief
My heart sinks whenever I know there may be a need to access healthcare and our crazy insurance from a distance. My oldest has had all sorts of health issues, as I've shared here, and attended school a four hour plane ride (and a car ride of a couple days minimum) away. Two big moments: passing out in the shower fall of freshman year, which led to her needing an appendectomy. Then there was the whole "locked in a mental institution in Istanbul" situation while on exchange in Turkey. I've earned a few frequent flier miles during the past few years :-)
quark
A huge part of me is grateful that kiddo is commuting from home. Hugs to you guys...it's so hard to be away from the kids when they are ill or in pain. :grouphug: I hope the sprained ankle heals quickly and that stitches if any were few. Elise
Oh no! It's so hard to be away when your kids are sick or injured. So far, both of my college students have already been sick - one with strep and one with a terrible cold and complications. Ugh! The bright side is that my other two at home haven't caught either yet. :001_smile:
Guest
Aw, that's easy. The early morning text I don't wanna see says, "Mom? Can you bail me out of jail?" I hope you're daughter's ankle feels better soon!
Lori D.
Aw, that's easy. The early morning text I don't wanna see says, "Mom? Can you bail me out of jail?" I hope that's NOT one you've actually had! Our early-morning phone call happened almost two years ago: "Mom, can you and Dad come get me and the car from work. I just had an accident with the hot oil fryer and need to go to the emergency room." :svengo: [The story: In trying to save something that got knocked off a shelf over the stove, his hand went into the hot oil just after it had been turned off and was at 350Ëš -- 2nd degree burns all the way around on all fingers and thumb and a little into the palm. Praise the Lord -- no nerve damage and no skin grafts needed, and miraculously speedy healing and back to work in just over 5 weeks. But I hope to NEVER see or experience burns like that again.] Edited September 15, 2017 by Lori D.
omd21
I wonder if the stress of classes, tests, deadlines, being away, etc. makes them more susceptible to illness. Both my nieces were sick often during freshman year.

I got a text with a picture at 6:45am last week of "should I be worried if one eye is this red" DS had a horrible week of allergies. Then yesterday DD called saying her throat was terrible sore--then called 30 minutes later to say the health center said the good news was "no strep" but the bad news was that she would feel worse before she felt better because she had the beginnings of a bad cold. OneStepAtATime
:grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: I sprained an ankle, got a severe respiratory infection, got stung by an asp caterpillar, broke toes and acquired a 2nd degree burn. All separate incidents while at college. My poor parents. But we all survived and lived to tell the tale. Hang in there Mom. :)

Mom22ns
Last year I got a text from dd's boyfriend saying she couldn't breath and was refusing to go to the ER. He was a second year nursing major and if he thought she needed to go, I believed him! I called and convinced her to go. They had to put her on oxygen, do breathing treatments, give her antibiotic, and more - severe bronchitis triggering the worst asthma attack she'd ever had. Fortunately it was right after she turned 18 and at least we didn't have to deal with permission to treat a minor! I was so stressed out! Guest
I'm thankful for facetime and photos. Both of my dc had incidents where it was helpful for me to view the wound. Facial puncture wound thankfully with no dental repair needed meant ER; and a contagious skin infection (fortunately not staph, but definitely acquired from another student) also needed the correct physician plus alerting the college health service. Luckily the ERs have seperate staff for the alcohol poisoning cases so neither had to wait hours.
