Arcadia
But how do you know it's free? I think it's only for schools. It doesn't give an option to sign up.On the non-homeschool page, you can sign up under the student account still for free forIntroduction to Computer Science, https://edhesive.com/courses/apcs_introduction AP Computer Science Principles, https://edhesive.com/courses/apcs_principles AP Computer Science A (Java). https://edhesive.com/courses/apcs_java The AP Statistics course doesn't seems to be ready for sign up yet. I emailed Ms Dovi to ask just now so still waiting for reply and I don't expect any reply until tomorrow. Explorations in Coding (https://edhesive.com/courses/explorations) is another new course that doesn't have the Enroll Now button. Arcadia
This is the reply I received for the homeschool option. "The AP Statistics course is available now. Here is a link to the syllabus: http://edhesive.s3.amazonaws.com/AP_Statistics/Syllabus/AP_Statistics_Syllabus_Edhesive.pdf Our homeschool courses have changed for this year. The courses are fully taught by our teachers, so parents do not need to take on the coach role. Your learners will be able to get any information they need from our teachers and TAs in the student forum. You will be able to monitor their progress through their Edhesive accounts." mirabillis
The syllabus looks great, thanks so much for sharing. My son is really interested in taking as he really enjoyed Edhesive's AP Comp Sci and did really well on the test. Do we know if the format is similar - video based lectures like with Mrs. Dovi for AP-CS A? I'm thinking of that or AP Stats with Mr. Reini at Wilson Hill, as my son really enjoyed him as well... but I've never seen any reviews of this one yet. Arcadia
Do we know if the format is similar - video based lectures like with Mrs. Dovi for AP-CS A?I assumed so based on their reply to my email "The license fee includes: All course materials, including video lessons, interactive activities and automatically graded assessments Student support forum moderated seven days per week by the course instructor and team of teacher assistants" This course is brand new so I have no idea how good or bad it is going to be. I can teach my kids whatever is covered in AP Statistics so I am just looking for a self study course to supply the deadlines and quizzes so I don't need to be the bad guy. mirabillis
I'll be keen to know how students fare on the AP exam at the end of the year... I know that for us, Edhesive's AP-CS-A was a great set-up to supply deadlines. So I'd say go for it! (And then tell me how it is!! LOL) He felt AP CS had very little busywork - the activities taught him the programming he needed to know. I would *think* the same would be said for the statistics activities cited in the syllabus.

When I emailed them asking about the token, that's when they told me that the free versions are no longer available. That's sad if it's true. I could email them tomorrow and ask since I was a customer last year for my two boys and likely to pay up for the AP Statistics homeschool student license x 2kids. ETAï¼› Just sent them an email to ask about the section token for what used to be free. ETA: It is not free anymore. $150 per token. mirabillis
ETA: It is not free anymore. $150 per token. $150 is still cheap i think i paid that for the AP CS homeschool version. is that the total cost? better than expense if outsourcing to PAH or WHA (+/- $600-700)

My kids need interaction. I would rather pay more for it if the instruction is good.

mirabillis
So Arcadia, are you going for it? Are you our guinea pig? Anybody else? I've LOVE to hear feedback on how well both Edhesive and Wilson's Hill's AP Stats courses prepare for the AP... those are the 2 we are likely to choose from. But seeing some track record of how kids score on the exam would be a great help. :-)
Arcadia
So Arcadia, are you going for it? Are you our guinea pig? Anybody else?freesia's son is taking currently. My quirky kids aren't good for guinea pigs, I don't even remember to print their grades for their Edhesive AP Computer Science A course. I think both have around 80% (B) for final grades. My kid's don't remember their grades either. They are in middle school so I am only going to report their AP exam scores in their high school transcript but not bother with listing the courses. We are still deciding as my kids can self study and I can easily grade the FRQs using the answers provided by collegeboard when it comes to test prep. Arcadia
Do you know which textbook they use for AP Computer Science A? None but they list the Blue Pelican Java as the reference text. Link has the free book and answer key by the author. http://www.bluepelicanjava.com The course was basically videos followed by quizzes and exercises. It is possible to self study if your child does not need external deadlines to prevent procrastination.

Arcadia
I didn't see that on their site. It's not on their site anymore. I actually googled for their 2015/16 scheme of work. The other free book that is recommended is this one http://math.hws.edu/javanotes/index.html You can see the demo of the Unit 1 - Introduction to Java here https://course.edhesive.com/apcsa/unit?unit=9&lesson=30 If her math logic is strong, she won't really need the textbooks. My kids learnt the most from the coding exercises and figuring out on their own. They didn't read the textbooks. FYI, it looks like this now only available for purchase, the book download is free, but the answer key must be purchased, and you can only purchase in conjunction with the text. It's not a bad price, however.

3andme
A few suggestions on free alternatives: AP Statistics Udacity has two free courses Intro to Descriptive Statistics and Introduction to Inferential Statistics which together cover the AP material. These were once used by San Jose State for their intro. stat course AP Comp Sci A Edhesive (free abridged course from 2015-16) including video links on youtube. Building Java Programs. (pdf older version). This text was written by two Univ of Washington instructors for the the introductory programming courses at UW. The text is good but my favorite feature is the extensive array of practice problems and exercises. Almost all of these have been built into a website called Practice-it which automatically checks your solutions. The exercises are set up in a very logical and incremental fashion. Here is the website for the Summer class featuring a Syllabus, recorded lectures, readings, and homework. There are also links to Power points and videos designed to accompany the text embedded in the calendar. Recorded lectures from the current and other previous UWs classes are here. Solutions for the practice problems and exercises can be found on the textbook's website. Edx's Learn to Program in Java class is not what I would call a full blown class but the videos are very good and serve as a good source for concise and clear intros to many topics in Java. Udemy's Decoding AP Computer Science A was developed by a teen for other high school students taking AP. Bristayl
I would not count it Yeah, unfortunately you're probably right. I did find that I can still access the demo Intro to Comp Sci course that I signed up for last year just to take a look at it, so I'm having my daughter go through that. I'll have to decide if I want my son to go through this demo AP course this year while it is still available, whether or not he takes the exam.
