Old Dominion Heather
I'm looking for some historical fiction... The boys are almost 6 and 8. We are reading Ben and Me right now, but I'd like to follow it up with something else. I wasn't sure how they would handle Johnny Tremain... doesn't that end not so very happily? What am I forgetting about?
chai
Amos Fortune, Free Man is a great read-aloud. Another Robert Lawson book: Mr. Revere and I We loved the Jean Fritz books: Double Life of Pocahontas, Who's that Steppin on Plymouth Rock, Good Giants and the Bad Pukwudgies, Where was Patrick Henry..., And Then What Happened Paul Revere, Will You Sign Here John Hancock, Why don't you get a horse Sam Adams, Shh we're writing the constitution, Make Way for Sam Houston. I really like the Cheryl Harness books--shorter read-alouds or to read on their own. They are not read-alouds, but have you gotten the Venezia books on the presidents? DD loved these. Love the Genevieve Foster books: Year of Independence, 1776, etc.
Cathy in IL
My dd was 8 when we read Johnny Tremain. She said it was a "happy and sad ending." She also said, "War isn't supposed to be fun and games." It was probably one of her favorites yet.
