4th grade student , were in SOTW final book and I'm apprehensive about the intensity of the stories, WWI and II and Nazis - although we covered civil war very well and resurgence of nazis in American news has to be confronted

I guess I just miss the initial volumes where the conflicts were more abstract because they took place so long ago. I'm hoping someone can tell me that this was a great year for them and what their highlights were...

Why not take a break from SOTW and make your Modern History for 4th grade all about the more exciting and interesting events and people of the past 150 years:

- inventions

- discoveries

- medical break-throughs

- scientists

- explorers

- technology advancements

- art/music movements and

- biographies of famous 20th century history people

Alas, no matter what I do for searching today, I can't seem to find and pull up some of the great past threads with specific book titles and biographies for doing a "cheerier" modern history. These were the only ones that came up in my search:

For the record I delayed the modern era for my sensitive don and do not regret it

I appreciated the preceding post that addressed the goodness of this era. I mysel am alive because if the goodness of this era. Delaying teaching about evil and darkness for Rhys she group is appropriate.

I have a 1st grader, 4th grader, 7th grader doing modern history this year.  We are not going to skip over the harshness of modern history.  DH is a WWII enthusiast .  They have been hearing about that since birth. :)  We will have some deep discussions.  But,  when we get to 1900, we will study a decade a week.  We will study the inventions, science progress, music, fashion trends, fads, toys, etc.  It will be fun.  I will use these websites:  http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/index.html      and     http://www.vintageadbrowser.com/

And this book: https://www.amazon.com/Century-Food-Americas-Fads-Favorites/dp/B0003P4XWI

We're going to go use SOTW but add inventions, family history, etc. (Fortunately, my great-grandmother wrote about her everyday life in the early 20th century, and my grandmother gave me a copy.)

Here are some timeline cards. On the version for us, I made ones for when DH and I got married, when our house was built, when DS was born, etc.

It's amazing to me how spotty MY modern history is. I'm reading my public schooled 8 th grader SOTW and I'm learning things for the first time, getting the seeds of some of our current conflicts and issues. So glad that SWB wrote these books. Thanks again for the help with the time lines and links. Getting a handle on this year
