Lisa_Ann
A heads up for people considering The Grammar of Poetry by Matt Whitling. We just finished the Grammar of Poetry and were VERY disappointed that he used words / or brought up things like heck/hell, adultery/fornication, a 45-year-old man marrying a 15-year-old girl, 2 lovers, lips of the adulteress drip honey, etc. As a homeschooling mother, it is my choice and responsibility to bring up those kinds of things with my children at the appropriate time and don't expect them to be in a curriculum I purchase from a Christian teacher. This is why I homeschool - so I can keep junk like that out of his education at his age. We live in the world and have plenty of opportunities to engage in these topics or discuss these words - I don't appreciate them in his text book. When searching for reviews before purchasing this curriculum, I would have appreciated reading a review like mine, so this is for those of you who would feel the same.
RootAnn
I remember there being one lesson near the end that the mom who was running the small group poetry class skipped because we didn't feel it was appropriate for the age of the kids she was teaching. I don't remember all of the things you mentioned, but I wasn't always there during class & the other mom might have skipped some parts or I missed a few things. I know we were disappointed in some of the mistakes in the books & video considering how much we paid for it. However, the kids turned it into a joke: Can we spot Mr. Whitling's mistake today? I thought the coverage of the topics was good. It certainly helped my dd#2 when her online literature analysis class did a very short poetry section. She already knew how to 'scan' a poem and the various meters. The class would have gone much too quickly if she hadn't had the GOP class previously.
