What is this kind of math question called?

Recommended Posts

Problem 1:

Jan bought 1.78kg of apples for $2.79. How much did she pay per kilogram? How many kilos could she buy for $5?

I know how to answer this but my dc find it a little confusing. They can never remember which way to divide. Frankly, I always have to think a little first to make sure that I'm not getting the reciprocal of the true answer. We had a terrible question this week about currency exchange that made me almost cry because I taught my oldest ds how to do it incorrectly the first time around. I want to try to explore this with both my older two dc by googling ways to look at these types of word problems but I can't remember what they're called. Anyone know?

Dimensional analysis? That's where you can show the units of everything you're doing and figure out which units cancel out and what units you're left with.

It's useful for those "one pig is worth 3 chickens and two chickens are worth 5 ducks so how many horses...." kind of questions. And for deriving answers on your grade 11 physics tests when you've forgotten to study. Er... Yeah. ;)
