mathnerd
My son reads a lot. The bulk of his reading is for pleasure. He also loves non-fiction so he reads a lot of non-fiction books. So, he needs very little guidance on book selection from me for fun books and non-fiction books. As far as the Classics are concerned, I don't have a list of required reading books for him. I feel that I can do better in improving his exposure to Classics if I came up with a list and stuck to it. In the past, I have picked classics like The Hobbit, Narnia, Treasure Island, Jungle Book etc because these are the ones that I thought might interest him and have assigned them as "required reading". Is there a list of Classics for kids/tweens that is out there that I can base my selections on? It would be immensely helpful if there is a recommended list of Classics (if there is one online, that would be great). Thanks in advance. ETA: Sensitive reader, but, seems to be able to handle more sensitive content recently than before. Jackie
The Mensa Excellence in Reading lists are pretty good and varied. Not all the books on them are classics, but a majority are. Here is the list for 4th-6th graders: http://www.mensaforkids.org/achieve/excellence-in-reading/excellence-in-reading-4-6-list/. And when he's ready to move on, here's the list for 7th-8th grade: http://www.mensaforkids.org/achieve/excellence-in-reading/excellence-in-reading-7-8-list/.
