amo_mea_filiis.
Reading recommendations for my son. We've done this a billion times by now, but I don't want to search. Besides, there's new books that wouldn't be in older posts. Everything will be audio or read aloud. We have LearningAlly and the library. Unless he absolutely adores it, I'm not likely going to buy it. 12, 13 in October. Has REALLY enjoyed; The Hobbit, The Secret Garden, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Enjoyed, but only listened once; American Gun, Oliver Twist. He's listened to many others, but nothing comes to mind. He listens to a few scary story podcasts. The only thing he's ever visually read and loved is the Amulet graphic novel series. He's read them several times, but has not read more than one page on anything recommended after Amulet. He's in a public cyber, but it's looking a lot like homeschooling. His language arts this year is only Barton, so I want to help his rediscover his love of audiobooks. No content is off limits, but it has to be non-fluff if it's not age appropriate. He swims, plays drums, and is a Young Marine. I was also thinking of doing seasonal or monthly themes. :) We're not religious. :lurk5:

Ausmumof3
If he loves the Secret Garden there are others by the same author- little princess may or may not work but little Lord Fauntleroy might. If you've enjoyed the hobbit you could go on with that series.
amo_mea_filiis.
He did not get into LotR, but we can try again. :) I can't remember what he said about Little Princess, but I think it was positive.

nixpix5
My sons really loved the Eragon series at that age. The Uglies series was another great one, and one of my sons loved anything by Darrin Shan (Cirque de Freak being his favorite series).

Carol in Cal.
Exodus by Leon Uris. Hawaii--have him skip the first chapter though and start with the part in Tahiti. The Prydain books (5 of them) by Lloyd Alexander -- the last one won a Newbury award. They are similar in 'feel' to LOTR but on a lesser reading level. Ben Hur Tales From the White Hart by Arthur C. Clarke. Also Childhood's End, same author
