Long time lurker, but first time posting. I need some help. My dd just started sixth grade this year. We used Saxon math 7/6 last year and it felt like it was pulling teeth all year. My plan was to do Saxon math 8/7 this year. We are seven lessons in, and I feel really drained already. Before last year we had used a bunch of different math curricula. We have used horizons, ( which I loved, she said was too hard) Abeka, (which I hated and she was ok with) Math Mammoth briefly, (we both hated) and CLE for third and fourth grade (She hated at first, but liked it better the second year.) I stopped using it because I had briefly talked to our local public school and they acted like it wasn't good enough, when I thought about enrolling her in public school. I figured Saxon would be better because it is more widely recognized. My dd is not what I would consider mathy. When I gave her the Saxon placement test she tested into math 7/6 after finishing cle math 4. She needs review. Mastery is a disaster for her. I just want her to like math. I just feel like everyday when I pull out the math book I can see her shutting down internally. Should I go back to CLE? I have also heard that Lial's BCM is good for building confidence and filling in any holes. Should I try that, if so what edition? I think that my dd will freak out with the word college in the title though. Or should I just stick out Saxon? I am also open to other suggestions as well. On a side note she is very moody and everything gets under her skin right now.

Sounds quite a lot like my 6th grade DD. We used Singapore when she was little, then CLE for a few years, then Math Mammoth the last couple years. Unfortunately, we were just falling further and further behind, struggling to get through lessons.

I'm looking at Lial's BCM, but first I'm going to do a workbook called Mastering Essential Math Skills. Once we get through that, I'm going to try to move onto BCM.

I struggled to find a good math fit for my 2nd DS too. MM and Saxon were both a bust so I tried Life of Fred just because he was so demoralized about math by that point. He did the Fractions and the Decimals and Percents book and maybe a couple of others and then when he was in 8th grade I just threw up my hands and gave up and started him on Algebra with VideoText. It went better after that.

I definitely wouldn't recommend LoF as a full curriculum throughout elementary (or beyond) but to give him a mental break in math after he already knew all the basic arithmetic from other programs, it was an okay decision for him.

I think his brain just needed some time to develop and mature because he's now a sophomore and doing fine and finishing up VideoText.

I would go back to cle. It isn't considered behind; actually I think it's advanced but I haven't used it up to her level. I would take the placement test on their website, too. You don't want her to start at a level that's not right and start off frustrated. I think the only complaint I've seen on here is not enough emphasis on word problems but that could be supplemented.

I'd go back to CLE. She might need to start back in the 500 level. . .

And, please, for her sake, stop skipping around to different programs for a bit. You don't have to use CLE for Algebra and above (and it is fine to use different publishers for Algebra, geometry, and above), but elementary publishers have hugely different scope/sequences. It is hard for a kid to skip around without significant gaps or frustration.

A child who tests into Math 76 after finishing a fourth grade text sounds math-y to me. :-)

Did she finish Math 76 with at least an 80% average? If not, then she should have gone into Alg. 1/2 instead of Math 87.

We like CLE here. I bounced around a bit with my oldest and then discovered CLE for my youngest and wish we'd known about it all along.

If that's what's worked, you could go back to that. It's a thorough curric. Why didn't the school like it? Were they actually familiar with it, or was their negativity a knee-jerk reaction to something they'd never heard of? Most reviews on it say it's a strong math program.
