LauraBeth475
How often would you expect a generally writing-competent fourth grader to turn in a composition. Such as a half to full page book narration or short report?
hollyhock
When mine are in 4th grade, they are just transitioning from oral narration to written. By the end of the year, I am happy if they can get a 3-4 sentence paragraph down on paper, twice a week. So yours sounds way ahead to me! But to answer the question: two a week (but only a paragraph; not a whole page).
LauraBeth475
My last kid took a *lot* longer to develop these skills. Hence my desire to recalibrate my expectations for this one.
8filltheheart
1/wk.
Guest
Twice a week for one of my kids-- one from his writing program and one from health, science, or history readings.
LauraBeth475
I think I'm going to go with one composition for language arts each week, and a second from a content subject.
SilverMoon
Roughly once a week here too.

Heathermomster
Help me out. What are kwo and b-m-e? IEW starts with teaching key word outlines. B-M-Es (beginning-middle-ends) are three sentences that summarize events in a story.
Sneezyone
DS will start with weekly paragraphs and end with weekly 1-pagers.
Janeway
One of my issues with public school is they always put quantity ahead of quality. In 4th grade, I have never required much beyond a paragraph. A well written paragraph of course, but that was it.
reign
Mine do 1 a week. On Saturday. It's the only thing that day besides piano.
2_girls_mommy
One of mine did 1-2 a week at that age. Ours were written summaries of SOTW chapters, and she did one for every section most of the time. The other did 1-2 a month.

Julie Smith
At that age we were still working on sentences. I think maybe Eldest was onto occasional short paragraphs.
....
At 4th grade (I have a 4th grader this year, actually), we're doing copywork, narration, dictation and notebooking. I don't require her to write reports, yet. If she wants to do a creative writing project, I don't correct it (SWB mentions this in one of her writing lectures).
Hobbes
I really thought this article was helpful for me. https://www.simplyconvivial.com/2016/teach-writing-without-curriculum This is great, thanks! Takes all the pieces I have gathered in my brain and lays them out in logical order. 😠
