Laptop -- y'all are probably ahead of me...

We've had a crazy, difficult summer, so we finally got around to laptop shopping. We compared and decided that buying from the college really was the best deal.

So we drove there today (an hour each way). He didn't get his ID card at orientation because they ran behind, so we got that and also set him up for a commuter meal plan, which was easier to do in person.

Then we went to look at the laptops. And "of course" their stock was low, and they didn't have the one he wants in stock.

So we ordered it, and he can pick it up the first week of classes. A little close, but it works,

Don't put off buying a laptop!

  • 3 weeks later...

Wish I had seen this sooner!  My son is a senior in high school doing full time dual enrollment at a local university this year.  Somehow him needing a laptop wasn't on my radar at all, despite the fact that one of his classes is in computer science.  School started this week and sure enough on day 1, the prof asked them to bring their laptops to every class. :glare:  I had to order one online, with rush shipping it is supposed to be here tomorrow but the website says it hasn't shipped yet.

What laptop did you buy?

An HP Notebook from Sams Club.  It's middle of the road.  Assuming he takes good care of it, we are planning to buy him a more top of the line one when he actually goes away to school next fall and this will become younger brother's for his last 2 years of high school.  This is a big step for us, they have always shared an older desktop (purchased used) that was in our homeschool space.

Are you shopping for one for your student?

My DS is dysgraphic and has carried a laptop for years.  In the past, he carried a tiny Samsung Netbook and currently uses a Lenovo.  Tiny screws are falling out of his Lenovo, and it's frustrating.  Anyhoo..

I am kinda shopping and am wondering whether a Mac might serve his purposes better.  DH is completely opposed to the idea of a Mac, and I haven't looked at PCs recently.

We have the screws falling problem with all the big name/common brands. I have used replacement screws for eye glasses and I have also just don't bother and use my laptops with missing screws for years.

My husband has a company issued MacBook and he finds that harder compared to his iPhone and iPad.

WebAssign doesn't work for some functions on our iPads, and need plugins for MacBook. So my oldest does his class quizzes on his windows laptop just in case.

Which Lenovo does he have now? We are looking at getting the Lenovo Yoga 11.6" to use at the library because of the size and weight. My kids current 15" laptops are heavy when we do work at the library as we walk there.

Son's Lenovo is a 15" with an AMD A8 processor. I think we bought it 2 years ago. It's too big. Apparently, the video is good. Son runs AutoCad and some sort of data logging software with it during his science lab, DS is a high school senior, so not at college yet.

The video is good? Does that mean that it has a high quality screen and/or that it has an Nvidia card to do the Graphics?

Our laptops are  Dell Enterprise grade machines (designed for and sold or leased to governments and corporations originally) and they have high quality Screens. 4 of the 6 have Nvidia Graphics.  That does make for faster Graphics, but it is important to note they are optimized for business/commercial/corporate use and not for Gaming...

No problems with Screws falling out here, but our laptops rarely move. The exceptions to that are a mini ACER laptop that DIL carries around in her backpack, which is just over 2 years old now and a  Dell Consumer grade laptop my Stepson has, which I assume is about 6 or 8 years old now.

If I was going to buy a Consumer grade machine, I would probably look at Dell and Lenovo. Lenovo is the largest PC manufacturer in the world.

DS loves the Nvidia card and games with it occasionally, like when I won't allow him to haul the family desktop to a friend's house....

I haven't looked at Dells in forever. Ok, I'll check them out.

I suggest looking at Used or Refurbished Enterprise grade machines. Not Consumer grade which is what they sell in Retail stores.
