pinkelement
For those that took Algebra 2 with Wilson Hill, did your student use Wacom Intuos Draw CTL490DW Digital Drawing and Graphics Tablet? Hah, the price on the Amazon is around $80.00, which I totally didn't expect to spend on top of the $120 for the textbook and the answer key book for this course. I would love to hear if the students really get to use it. I also see that the same tablet is being requested in their later courses, PreCalculus and Calculus, as well as Statistics. My daughter may continue with them for all of their math and if so, we would end up using it. The reason I am asking is because I have heard from the parent 2 years ago, that it was also requested for the Geometry and they ended up not using it, which of course was frustrating. To be fare, it is taken off the Geometry materials page. Thanks, Irene
fourisenough
I would ask your student's particular teacher; some teachers use them, some don't.
MorningGlory
My son was in Mr. Reini's Algebra 2 course last year. Ds never used the pen tablet once the entire year. Now...having said that...I have posted elsewhere that my son did not "actively" participate in the course during the class meetings. He did not make comments in the chatbox, and he certainly didn't volunteer to work any problems on the whiteboard. I'm sure other students did, so they probably DID use their pen tablets. My son did receive low participation grades as a result of his lack of participation (lol), but he still finished the year with a strong A average. I already owned the tablet because I use it for my physics course, so it was not an extra expense...thank goodness.
pinkelement
Thank you Jetta, that is a great insight. My daughter also tends to stay in the background. But once she is comfortable and is familiar with the group, she actually enjoys participating. So, I guess we'll go with the tablet.
Omma
What did you say about the Geometry materials list being revised? We bought that tablet a couple of months ago just so we could use it for Geometry. Guess we'll use it someday anyway, but didn't realize changes have been made. I guess I better check the other classes, too...
mirabillis
I'll ask my ds... he took it last year with Reini too and he was a super active class participant. But my feeling is he also never used it. I'll ask him and report back.

I didn't learn of WHA till last year, but have heard from one mom that the tablets that she bought for her kids for the Geometry class were never used. They took the class prior to us, so I assume it was on the list of the materials for the class back then. It is not there now. But it could also be the situation of kids participating or not. I am not eager to spend the money, especially that I don't see a use for it at the moment, besides for this class. We are pathetically low tech people. And this is going to be a very foreign object in our household. :) But if it's going to be the only way for my kid to interact in the class, then of course, I'll get it.
Lanny
No experience with that particular course or that particular Wacom product. Years ago, TTUISD listed a product for a Math course that wasn't available here in Colombia. We discovered that, after DD began the course, and that was a big surprise. We bought a Wacom Bamboo tablet for her instead. She used it for Math courses and also she has used it for for 2 Art courses and for other drawing. I think she's had it for approximately 5 years now. It is like a Precision Mouse. NOTE: It has a "Learning Curve". Allow some time to become familiar with it, before actually trying to use it. There is a "Tutorial" in the excellent Free Software they included with the Wacom Bamboo we bought for DD. NOTE: I asked DD about this when we were eating Lunch. She doesn't use the Wacom Bamboo tablet for Math now. For awhile, she was doing her Math in MS WORD, but now (Algebra 2), she is doing her work on paper and scanning it in. She said the Intuous (SP?) is much better than the Bamboo. If your student is at all interested in Art, this will be a great purchase. If it is only for the Math course, probably a waste of your $, unless it is mandatory.
Amy in KS
My daughter didn't use it in Geometry or in Chemistry (where it was also recommended). I don't think she ever got the hang of it and used a scratch pad on her computer. We bought the one they recommended, Wacom (not Bamboo). SA Homeschooler
My son took Alg 2 with Mr. Reini last year and never even unboxed the tablet. He will be taking Pre-Cal with Steubing this year so we shall see....but for now it just sits in the box.
RootAnn
If you want a definitive answer, send an email (or mail through Canvas) the teacher. I'll ask my ds... he took it last year with Reini too and he was a super active class participant. But my feeling is he also never used it. I'll ask him and report back. Mirabillis - Can you update on what your son said?

MarkT
It seems like in this day and age an alternative would be to sketch it on a real whiteboard or piece of paper then take picture with a "device" such as a smartphone for uploading. I assume WHA doesn't really care how information is produced to share with the class and the instructor.
