We found this one at a thrift shop and my kid whipped through it. Seemed to leave a good impression:

If your kid is 12+ or an extremely advanced/voracious reader of any age, I recommend the Oxford Press version retold by Geraldine McCreaghan and illustrated by the great Victor Ambrus:

The Great Illustrated Classics versions are at a 3rd grade reader level, which should be very workable as a read-aloud for younger ages. (I linked Moby Dick.)

I'm also wondering if a graphic novel version might be fun: Campfire Graphics version by Stahlmar & Kumar seems to have a lot of original text for retelling the story. Perhaps the Marvel graphic novel by Thomas & Alixe. (see samples here).

The HMR Books for Young Readers version doesn't retain original text, BUT it has insert pages with a lot of info on whales and whaling -- which is part of Melville's novel.

As an update, I ended up getting a used copy of the last recommendation above. I love it! The vocab is great! I have to admit that I'm learning quite a bit alongside my daughter. I requested books about whaling as well & learned Starbucks coffee is named after the book's character (who knew?). We're folding in new vocab, geogrpahy & Bible stories. Is there anything else you've included in a book or unit study? (I'm pumped!)
