What is your dream job?

My dream job was to report around the world for National Geographic, writing interesting pieces about various areas/cultures/peoples, venturing in to areas of the world most don't.

Then I realized that would be difficult to do while having a family.

So.....I am a school counselor......close, right?

My dream was to stay at home and raise my children. I guess I succeeded. :D

Seriously though, I was told to think about what I really wanted out of life when I was about 21 years old. I said I wanted to be a stay at home mom. Well that isn't a job that you find in the classifieds so I decided to become a child care worker, that morphed into a live-in nanny then a live-in nanny in the NE corridor. I met my husband in NJ and here I am... though it did take us nearly 5 years after we got married to have our first take home baby.

So I have been living my dream for the last nearly 9 years (I was a stay at home wife since March 2005 but mom, on and off -lost children- since July 2006).

I do want to emphasis that I am not perfect. There are days I question my sanity, but at the end of the day I would never want to do anything else. Dream job does not equal perfect all the time.

I have no desire to go back to work. My dream job all of my life was to be a teacher, and I was for 15 years before becoming a sahm and homeschool mom.

The only thing I'd like to do now is possibly write and publish a novel. Not The Great American Novel, just a mystery like the kind I enjoy reading.

What is your current dream job?

Has it changed?  Did you have something that was your dream job but now isn't?

Do you like your current job?

I enjoy my current job.  My current dream job, though, is to be a speechwriter.

My dream job would be getting to introduce kids/families to travel - esp those who never thought it would be possible to travel due to income or similar.  I'd especially like to introduce folks to many of our National Parks from Yellowstone to Dry Tortugas to... whatever was different than where they were from.

I also wouldn't mind being a "secret investigator" checking on serious needs (medical, education, housing, community, whatever) and then being able to anonymously assist with the financial part of that need.  This would be my job if we ever won a big lottery.  Actually, I'd probably do both.

I would love to be a medical social worker/patient advocate for families with special needs children. I don't want the paperwork or hassles of the job, just the actual helping.

I want to help families access services, help them understand "doctor talk" , navigate the hospital and education systems, etc.

Probably a toss up between cooking healthy meals for families or a travel agent. They're really my two passions. Unfortunately I think travel agents are going by the wayside. And I spent a lot of time getting certifications for the cooking thing, but can't find a kitchen space even remotely affordable to try a go at it. I enjoy marketing, which is what I'm doing now, but if I could make a decent living at either of the others I would do so in a heartbeat.

My dream job would be to own a used bookstore.   Second on the list is to open a Homeschool Resource Center that offers classes, meeting/classroom space for use by groups, curriculum consignment/swap/sale, drop-in childcare......and a used bookstore.   :D    We are actually looking into doing part of this - offering science classes for homeschoolers, and drop-in workshops.  We're trying to finalize our space.

Waaaaaay back when I first graduated high school, I wanted to be a veterinarian.  That was my dream from the time I was 12 years old until the second time I had to take a break from school and ended up married with a kid.   Instead I've mainly worked as a executive assistant, which I've been fairly content with or at least haven't hated most of the time, and did a lot of teaching, science and nature stuff on a volunteer basis.

One of my son's friends founded a non-profit that does this, although on a more local level. He's a pretty impressive guy. He was both a Truman and a Rhodes finalist in college and his first post-college job was working for the governor. Now he works full-time at one non-profit for children while running the travel one.

For YEARS my dream was to get a job within the law enforcement industry. The closest I've come to that is my current

very part-time job as a security guard. I like the job but it's not quite what I wanted. After many years of frustration, and realizing certain unnamed members

of my immediate family were no on board with this, I've switched focus. Now my goal is to become a well-known author of various fiction genres.

My dream job just opened up this week, but it's a volunteer (unpaid) position.  *sigh*  LOL  There is a non-profit that I love and I would really like to be a volunteer coordinator--someone who manages, trains, and sets up volunteer teams to work at the place.  There would be other duties like light clerical but this is what I really like to do.  Galvanize volunteers--they are usually so diverse, I love it!--to accomplish the goals of a charity/non-profit that I love.

When I was a kid I wanted to be an Egyptologist. that never happened. As an adult I wanted to be a fiction writer, still working on that, but it's on the back burner for the next few years although I still write on a irregular basis.

Now? I want to a medieval historian focused on researching power and identity and in 12th century England. My dream part would be to research only, not teach, write fiction on the side, and attend conferences and give talks on my research. The reality is that I'll probably end up with my MA not my PhD, adjunct to get library privileges, work part time at the history related job locally and hang out with some of the same nerdy people I already do. I'm too old and the job market too tight for me to expect much else. I'm kind of okay with that now. I couldn't handle sitting in the sand for hours digging up stuff now and I really like research, it's like being a paper archaeologist, still digging for clues and stuff, just indoors.

Or cooking at families' homes for them?

I think it would be cool to be a fitness director at an all-inclusive resort somewhere in the Caribbean for the winters, and have the summers off to travel or return to Canada to visit family. As long as I was allowed to used the facilities as well, that is.   I hope my dh's dream job is at the same resort. ;)

I have always wanted to be a hospital baby cuddler, since before I had my own children. I've always thought that sounded awesome. When I worked in daycare in college, they told us student assistants, "If there's nothing immediate to do, pick up a baby to cuddle." It was fabulous!

Now, having been a NICU mom briefly, I am considering going back to school in a few years to become an RN so I can be a NICU nurse and help in additional ways to cuddling those precious babies. That's something I never expected I might be able to do, but my son's nurses mean the world to me, and maybe I can be that for another family. (I inquired about being a cuddler, but the waiting list is long.)

My other dream job is a chef, or at least to attend a fancy cooking school. I like cooking okay and am decent at it, but I always thought it sounded like fun to learn to cook fancy dishes. I also think being a restaurant reviewer would be great too, trying new places all the time. DH and I would have so much fun doing that!

But my real dream job has always been to be a mom of million kids. Babies I don't ever have to give back! Babies I don't have to ask to hold! Toddler hugs just for me! I've loved it so much and hope like crazy I still have a few more years ahead of me with small people. That dream hasn't changed in oh, forever. Probably since my first sibling arrived when I was two.

My dream job, is to win the lottery so I can open my own business.  It won't be profitable...hence the lottery LOL  I want it to be a space for both the parents and children of special needs kiddos.

I would open a 'play gym' for kids with special needs.   An indoor playground full of equipment used in OT/PT offices for special needs kids. The more innocuous things like swings, and small rock walls, ball pits etc.

Kids would be able to schedule time in the gym like a 2 hour appointment, but not have it be a medical environment.   Each child would have a personal assistant to help them play.

In my mind, there would be a center area with spokes coming off of it. I would want each spoke to be a room. Each room would  have a 'play assistant' and a few pieces of equipment. The wall connecting the spoke rooms, to the center room, would be clear and have a clear door, so the parent can seen inside, but the noise inside would be reduced for the child, if they want it to be. At one area on the spoke, there would be a large free for all room, so the kids could play together, but still each have an assistant.  Neruo typical siblings could be in the open play area without an assistant.

The parents could be involved, but they could also sit in the center and have a cup of coffee and chat with others.  I would also like for there to be a balcony that is purely a quiet space for the parents to take a time out. Like a large reading area, but with instructions for it to be a quiet space so the parents can just relax if they want.

I would love for this to be near a school for people wanting to work in OT/BT/PT so they could possibly be a pool of people to hire :0)

My goal...is for there to be a play area that puts the special needs kiddos wants first and the parents wants second, and the NT kids needs 3rd.  Playgrounds are not that great for special needs kids.  I want to switch that up, and provide someone to actually do the play for the parents....so the parents can chill for a bit.  Realistically there would maybe be 5 rooms and the open area, so a max of 5 families or so at a time.  Not too much chaos, but a nice group.

My job would to be...taking care of the parents...and helping as needed of course. But it is a dream.....

My dream job is to own a plant nursery. I want to grow stuff. I would have greenhouses open to the public and gardens to display different options for landscaping. In my daydream I have multiple huge greenhouses on several acres of land--each green house full of rows and rows of annuals, roses, herbs, vegetables, perennials, I would even like to make my own organic compost/lawn dressing and teach people how to use it to fertilize their lawns instead of using chemical fertilizers. (It's a need we have in my city. I can't find bulk, by the truckload organic compost.) I could go on and on. It's a very elaborate day dream I have. :)

Practically, I would really just love to find a job as a part time library assistant. I love libraries.

I'd like to order a stationery store, with a focus on Japanese stationery products. Maybe with a small coffee shop/bakery inside.

Or a detective.

Or a judge.

Or get paid for napping.

Oh my goodness...another mom with a love of Japanese stationery products. Opening a store would be great but to make it better, catered meals would be brought in every day.

Hmm, I would love to be a child life specialist. Brightening the days of sick children and reducing their anxiety sounds ideal to me.

But I have enough experience with adoption and particular special needs that I could use my knowledge to be a counselor to adoptive parents and children as they navigate life. Frankly, I'm fed up with the lack of understanding of RAD and FASD among mental health professionals. I do have a social work degree, but I would have to go to graduate school and we have no money or time for that right now while I'm raising my own kids.

If we came into significant money it would be awesome to get that education as soon as my little guy is high school age. I love Tap's idea and would love up fund a play center like that.

I also have a desire to be a judge or a legal advocate for kids in the system. Or maybe a billionaire who influences the system heavily to change the broken foster care system.

Someone stole my dang megamillions jackpot last night.

Foster care has been one of my serious interests. I do consider putting money into schooling and then working in the system just to pay for the education before retiring. I'm beginning to think I'd like to work more with the parents on safety/reunification than with the kids, even. But the system (and health care) isn't exactly set up for success there.

That sounds awesome.  Youngest son just returned yesterday from his summer job in a FL camp that brings inner city kids to the country so they can experience various things.  It almost made me tear up hearing about kids - even some counselors - who got to see horses, goats, forests, even vultures for the first time, then getting to kayak or various other things.  Some outright told him they wished they could have his life and live in "peace."  They noted that many of the things he "required" in his cabin (generally polite, "good human" things) would get them shot in their home environments - such weird peer pressure cultish things they have to adhere to in order to not offend the wrong people.  Education is their only possible way out, but succeeding at school - even for the very intelligent lads - is not easy to do.  The kids got one week of seeing the other life - then back home they go.  My guy has no way of keeping up with any of them.

It really drives home just how much the birth lottery means to so many people (pro or con).

If I had won the (financial) lottery... (sigh)

State regulations bar me from doing the at-home thing. And not many people want you prepping in their kitchens. Plus, my goal was to make big batches of a few different entrees per week and sell to subscribers or one-offs. Maybe when the kids are out of college I can invest some money in it. Or maybe state regulations will loosen up.

Have you checked with a small Christian School or organization if you can use their health department approved kitchen 2-3 days a week on their off times?
