Recommended Posts

really?  there is nobody here who uses this program?  I am desperate here.  I am really needing to know if this is a decent, basic biology program or not.  PLEASE....pretty please...with sugar on top....give me your reviews.

thanks so very much!!!!!

check your pm.  I shared some links that have reviews from schoolhouse review crews. They probably all got something for posting review but each person gave different details that might make help.   I feel your pain about finding something for biology this year.  I'm close to just modifiying what I have to make it work in some fashion. Then close to picking friendly biology because we liked friendly chemistry well enough for basic high school. I don't need advanced.

anyway... check pm. Since it's away from this forum I didn't want to share them on thread, and I haven't personally used any of the fascinating products to share.

We never used any of the Fascinating... programs, but I did write the author in January of 2016. He took 4 days to respond which didn't bother me at all. We went another way, and our correspondence consisted of my email and his response. That was it.

What did bother me is that on August 4, as in last week, out of the blue I got a LinkedIn add request for the author. I loathe all manner of cold calls, and it might not be his fault. Still, it irked me.

For our science hater, we used a tweaked version of Guest Hollow's biology. For Physics for this child I used GPB's physics. They've re-done chemistry and will overhaul their physics as well.

thanks for the links to the reviews.

We used Friendly Chemistry and one of my 2 kids did ok..the other one needed outside tutoring to finish.  I considered Friendly Biology, but his DVD's aren't done yet and that was one thing my son really liked.

so the search is still on.

That is not his fault. LinkedIn searches all contacts and sends these out. It is that previous email that caused this to happen. A few months ago, I got one from a teacher one of my children had for a semester almost ten years ago. I know that was not on purpose.

I am trying to decide between Guest Hollow and Fascinating_________ (biology and physics)

Pros of GH over FB for me are the use of worksheets.  FB only seems to have videos and a quiz.  They do have the print out textbook and I would have my kids take notes.  But, we are kind of a worksheet family....just for comprehension sake....

the one con of GH over FB for me is the use of you tube videos....and it is a con because I can see my kids easily getting distracted by what other videos would pop up and the ads too...oh, plus all of the extra books they suggest buying.  One of the main books they suggest using for Biology, my kids are already using for their theology class....so yes, we already own it, but I can't decide if that works against us having them use it in 2 different classes or not. (one is this year....and my son would use it again next year....but this year my daughter is currently using the books)

Anyway, we have already started school and so I am feeling the pressure to figure this out quickly.

Thanks. If it's through contacts, then I don't know why I was added to his contacts. Maybe it's automatic. What you say makes sense. I still just don't like it, but I'm a grumpy old woman who clearly needs a  :chillpill: .

There are no affiliate links in this post.

Another thing to consider is that GH is from a creationist standpoint and FB "discusses evolution" (from a review). Not sure how much or if that matters to you.

FB suggests taking chemistry before biology. (See the note on FB's website here.) They offer a 6 lesson "pre-course" (their term, not mine) to take before bio. I don't see a price for that. Maybe it's included?

Also, Homeschool Buyers' Co Op has a deal for 40% off of FB now. That makes it $47 for a one year subscription or $105 for bio, chem and phys for a 2 yr subscription, if you'd go through 3 courses in 2 years. HBC also has other combos on sale too. Check it out, if you're interested.

If you could swing FB, you could use GH's book list and hit up your local library. I will warn you that the Henrietta Lacks book touches on some sensitive subjects (incest, adult language, mistreatment at a hospital), but I'm better for having read it. I should have read ahead and read it aloud to my child skipping some sections. (Please, please don't watch the Oprah movie of this book! Just don't!)

I'm going to send you a PM, OP, but wanted to mention the HBC's discount.

It is automatic. Somehow, it searches your contacts from your email. He signed up for Linkedin and it likely accessed his emails. I hate that programs do that, but they do. And since you emailed with him in the past, it automatically emailed you.
