Book catalog/collection app recommendations for home library

Recommended Posts

I've used Book Buddy plus (for Apple) for the past year or so.  I LOVE it!

You can easily scan in books using their ISBN code on the back and the fields are pre-populated.  If it's a book that doesn't have a scan code, you can just put it in manually.

You can easily tag by genre and sort quickly.  For example, we use Tapestry of Grace, so I tag my history books by TOG Year 1, Year 2, etc.  And science books I tag with 'science' as well as 'nature study' or 'astronomy' etc.

It backs up via Dropbox.

Ooo, that Book Buddy sounds slick! :)  I started with my software years ago, before the iphone ever existed, haha. I have a barcode scanner, but it's a little cantankerous. I just enter things in by hand. If you have older/oop books, a lot of times you're having to import or enter the LCCN/ISBN by hand anyway. You want to be able to drag and drop from amazon the listing for your book if you have even older books. I use Readerware. We've had some library software threads in the past if you do a google sitesearch.

I have the paid version of Book Crawler. I've used it in the past to organize our school literature collection. I added the books using a barcode scanner, then tagged them with what program we used them in (Sonlight, Biblioplan, etc) and what week or unit it was used in. I could also add titles that we didn't own but needed to check out from the library. Each week I could make sure to have our upcoming scheduled books by filtering the appropriate tags and then gathering the ones on the list that we owned and making a trip to the library for the others.

I haven't used it in a while so can't remember if genre automatically populated when scanning the books in; if not, you can tag them with your choice of genre label and then sort by tag.
