Ancients spine

Recommended Posts

We did SOTW through 4th grade, then last year we kind of did US history. (A topic for another day.)

Now we are jumping back into the history cycle. We aren't super classical homeschoolers, but I do like the history cycle and the narrative quality that SOTW had.  I was looking at SWB's high school Ancients texts and wondering if I could make that work.  Has anyone used the History of the Ancient World?

If that's not a great option, do you have any suggestions?  I've seen History Odyssey recommended but I'm not sure if it's the right level for DS.  Last time I checked his reading level 2 years ago he was at 9th grade comprehension.  I'm guessing he's at least 2 years beyond that now.  His output is not high school level, we are working on getting to middle school level this year.

TIA!

My son, who sounds similar to your son (high school reading level by 3rd grade, algebra in 5th), absolutely loved K12's Human Odyssey series.  I read it aloud, not because he needed it, but because it was fun.  I think he would have found History of the Ancient World to be tedious.

When their reading level is through the roof, whether or not its interesting seems to be the deciding factor.

Another vote for K12 Human Odyssey. It is like a more advanced version of SOTW.

Memoria Press' updates of the Dorothy Mills books would be another option. I don't think the samples look as engaging as K12 HO but it's definitely a step up in challenge level from SOTW.

This is a good point!  I will look at Human odyssey.

I want to try to add in Great courses as well so I guess it's not imperative that it be a super high level text anyways.

Thank you both!
