omd21
Hello everyone! DD took the SAT in 7th grade. She scored exceptionally well on the Math section, great in writing, and just above average in the Reading section. When she took it she had just started geometry. She is now entering 9th grade and I'm wondering when in high school would be a good time to take the SAT. We are going to be shooting for important scholarships and would like her English section score to be as high as possible. She took a great literature class last year that helped develop reading comprehension and we are planning on taking AP English language with PA homeschoolers in 10th. Would it be wise to retake the SAT right after that class? My concern is that by waiting too long the math will be way behind her. If you have a child with a similar disparity between math/language, could you share your experience?
GoodGrief
My second daughter was on a similar math track as yours, having done precalc in 9th grade. I recommend simply doing some solid test prep prior to the SAT. She will get math review as part of that. The math review is important, because the math tested on the SAT will not be fresh. My daughter prepped for the junior year PSAT and SAT at the same time, and took both in the fall of junior year. The SAT was a week before the PSAT if I recall correctly. It was an efficient way to use study time, and gave her the summer to complete prep.
catz
I would take it spring of freshman and sophomore year and see where you're at. Prep for winter to spring of junior year test if needed and take it. That will allow room to take one more time if needed. If the score is at a place where you feel done sooner, then great! Is SAT the test of choice where you're at? Sometimes ACT is better format for some and might be worth a try. We have to test every year in my state anyway, but my kid has improved with the ACT immensely between 7th and 10th grade and is in a good place for a strong score the spring of junior year next year. My kid hit algebra 1 in 5th. We have very intentionally taken a circuitous math route as not to get too far ahead of the testing sequence. He likes and is good at math, but writing out problems neatly and really solid accuracy took a bit longer for him. Especially after his early trials of the ACT showed he tested pretty well in his current math and less well in review math. We did start add a daily rolling review into his math. His ACT math score jumped 8 points in one year the year we did that.
