Susan in TX
If you were studying elementary US history using biographies, who would you include? I'm thinking of doing this with my 9 and 6 year olds. Susan in TX
HomeAgain
We are doing this as a side project, mostly because I have a ton of biographies at his level. So far our list is: John Smith, Pocahantas Ben Franklin John and Abigail Adams Molly Pitcher George Washington Johnny Appleseed Eliza Pinckney Thomas Jefferson Merriweather Lewis, William Clark, Sacageawea Harriet Tubman Abraham Lincoln Sarah Hale Sojourner Truth Susan B. Anthony Alice Paul Jane Addams John Muir Thomas Edison Nicolas Tesla The Mayo Brothers The Wright Brothers Nellie Bly Charles Lindbergh Billy Mitchell The Roosevelts Amelia Earheart Grace Hopper Martin Luther King Ruby Bridges Caesar Chavez We'll match them up with the time period we're doing in world history, so there will probably be a biography each week about someone up through SOTW vol. 4, but these are the strictly American ones we'll do. I'm on the fence about including others that may have more shock value, or saving them for the second go around.
almondbutterandjelly
Abeka's third grade history book does exactly that. You might check out their table of contents: http://www.abeka.com/ABekaOnline/BookDescription.aspx?sbn=104728
kbutton
I think I would try to be representative, and then get frustrated. We have some biographies we do together, and a lot of biographies (some that are easier or shorter than grade-level too for quick reads) hanging around the house for fun. I would also look for some anthology stuff that can be browsed, or that you can use bits and pieces from. Example of shorter: https://www.amazon.com/Michelangelo-Diane-Stanley/dp/0060521139/ref=pd_sim_14_60?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=0060521139&pd_rd_r=RHZJFHGCBP7PMRGZTJJE&pd_rd_w=ymcZ3&pd_rd_wg=M4ZmN&psc=1&refRID=RHZJFHGCBP7PMRGZTJJE Also, consider documentaries and podcasts. Stuff You Missed in History has a lot of biographies. Some you might want to pre-listen to. They are great in the car, and you can look at archives going back a long way. I can't find the exact books I have, but these are some examples of the kinds of books I have that can be browsed and have shorter bios: https://www.amazon.com/Women-Science-Fearless-Pioneers-Changed/dp/1526360519/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1501109319&sr=1-6&keywords=kids+who+changed+the+world https://www.amazon.com/People-Black-History-Americans-Collectors-ebook/dp/B005FTXREW https://www.amazon.com/Around-World-Hundred-Years-Navigator/dp/0698116380/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1501109412&sr=1-1&keywords=explorers+jean+fritz https://www.amazon.com/Picture-History-Great-Inventors/dp/0679847871/ref=sr_1_17?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1501109822&sr=1-17&keywords=inventors
