SparklyUnicorn
Could you describe it? Where on your body? What does it feel like? How long does it last? Is there a time of day that is generally worse than others? I know, weird question.
historically accurate
Mine looked like I was blushing, and had that heat that you get when blushing. Just a more extreme version of it. It lasted just a few seconds. My whole body got hot; I used to step outside in the winter in my (short) shirt sleeves. Dh joked I would melt the snow. No discernable pattern - they were pretty often for a couple of years after my hysterectomy, now they're pretty much gone (almost 7 years later).
trulycrabby
Mine started off with no sweating, just a prickly feeling running up and down my arms, then an upper body flush. They have progressed to drenching sweats.
G5052
Thankfully they're very rare now, but I was usually just insanely hot. I sweated some, but not drenching. Night was worse for me. Sleeping with a fan on my face and very light covers pretty much does it.
Pronghorn
I feel hot all over and my ears turn red. I feel very thirsty. This lasts a few minutes. At night I stick my feet and arms out from under the covers to cool myself. I have been having these for a decade and a half or so, and they are less intense than they used to be. They usually come multiple times a day. A hot flash almost always comes after I go to bed, often thoroughly rousing me when I had been tired. They wake me up during the night and in the morning too. A drink of cold water as soon as the hot flash starts can make it less intense.
Cinder
Me. Hard to describe. Just all over heat. Only for a few seconds. No sweating. Like a wave of heat, I guess. No pattern. I can go months without it. Tends to be a one off. Pretty much this, but mostly just my upper body, especially around my neck. Like, I'm noticeably hot when no one else is. I also don't see a pattern; it's happened a handful of times in the past year.
Bambam
Just a sudden flash of heat - sometimes just my head, sometimes just my upper body - my feet and legs will still be cold, but my upper body feels like I'm just radiating heat - like a super bad sunburn. Then 1-5 minutes later, it is gone. I haven't noticed a pattern.
gardenmom5
sometimes face sometimes extremities sometimes torso any time of day.
Pawz4me
I have hot flashes with and without sweating. Mine tend to be more frequent later in the day and in the evening/during the night than in the morning. It's a feeling of intense heat radiating out from my body. Mostly the torso area. For a long time before I had the first honest to goodness hot flash I was a LOT warmer almost all the time than was typical for me. I don't think I sweated much more than normal, but I sure did run hotter.
Barb_
Mine are more like an inability to regulate body temperature--sort of like a fever. They begin with a sort of welling up of heat from my core that radiates outward to my extremities. It only lasts a few seconds and then I'm shivering with chills. Progesterone cream has helped a lot. Hope it doesn't give me cancer.
KrissiK
Me. Hard to describe. Just all over heat. Only for a few seconds. No sweating. Like a wave of heat, I guess. No pattern. I can go months without it. Tends to be a one off. That's pretty much like mine. It's an internal heat. Not necessarily an external one, if that makes sense. Doesn't last longer than 15-30 seconds. Usually in the middle of the night. Just long enough to throw the covers off and then I get cold and pull them back up again.

I can go months without it. Tends to be a one off. This. Inferno heat, mostly from the torso up, for about 10 seconds in duration. I had them multiple times a day and night and suddenly they stopped for a few weeks. Today they are back.
HomeAgain
I just want to add, if you're having a patch of heat, you really want to get that checked out! It can indicate something like a tumor if you are feeling a hot spot, not an all over hot flash.
Martha in GA
Interesting that others tend to experience hot flashes at night. I almost always have one upon waking in the morning. To me, if feels like the flush you get when you get embarrassed about something.
dsmith
Mine usually starts in my head. It almost feels like it's behind my sinuses. My face turns red, too. I don't sweat all the time, but if it's humid I do. I'm glad I just had a brain MRI after reading the above comment about tumors, or I'd be freaking out right now, lol. I always have a hot flash while eating dinner, about halfway through the meal. It doesn't help that my in-laws turn off the air conditioner at dinner. Next year it's going in the window that's behind me!
OneStepAtATime
Random locations at random times. Sometimes mild sweating but mostly just incredibly intense heat sensation like the thermostat was turned up to 500 degrees.
sbgrace
Mine are almost always at night--fast come and then go. I just feel like the upper part of me is giving off intense heat. I throw off blankets and sheets and even sometimes my shirt, then I'm cold. It's quick and intense. Lately, I have started having sweating too occasionally. Suzanne in ABQ
I get different kinds of hot flashes. When I first wake up, I get really hot for a couple minutes. I know that once that happens, I will not go back to sleep, so I might as well get up (no matter what time it is). Sometimes I wake to use the restroom, and don't get the hot flash. That makes me happy for two reasons: 1) No hot flash. 2) I can go back to sleep. Through the day, especially if I'm not well hydrated, I get my normal, run-of-the-mill hot flashes. These generally manifest themselves gradually. I just feel like I need to turn on a fan or something. I usually ask, "Is it hot in here, or is it just me?" and get the response that it's not hot. It's just me. I just wait it out and it passes. In the evening, though, whoa! I'll get a wave of nausea, and I know it's coming. Then I break out in a profuse sweating attack that generally amazes my dh. He says he can feel the heat radiating off my body. Then it passes and I feel chilled because my hair and clothes and skin are wet. It's miserable, but it usually lasts exactly 3 minutes from nausea to chill. I have not had a period since last November. I am looking forward to when this will be all over. I have no idea when that will be.
TheReader
Mine were/are totally weird, and not at all like I imagined a hot flash would be like. At all. For starters, no "flash" about it for me....just....suddenly, I'm *really, really hot.* All over, hot. The first time it happened, it was so bad it was like being overheated, sick, etc, like when you've been in the sun for a really long time with no water, shade, etc. Just.....hot. No sweating, none of that, just....hot. Lately, they are more like just being a little hot, like I want my socks off, feet out of the covers, etc. Wondering if the A/C is on, even though I can hear it running. Or feeling like I need to change into shorts & a tank top vs jeans and a t-shirt. But, no sweating or anything, any of the times. Mine are usually an all-over feeling, and usually worse first thing in the morning, or middle of the night, but mostly I barely notice them yet. Sometimes they feel just like when I've been sitting in a hot tub for too long, that same kind of overheated feeling. Hope that helps....
