TerriM
Anyone here from St. Louis who can give me their perspective on B&M schools for a PG kid who excels in Math?
raptor_dad
I'm from MN,but we have local friends. Their son went to a french immersion charter and then Malinkrodt and is now at the arts charter(Grand). He qualified on piano and french horn, but his real strength is math/science. They have been very flexible so far on courses. He took pre-cal this past year and will take AP Calc and AP science courses as an 8th grader. Wouldn't work for our kids but we have friends whose kids went to School of the Arts in SF instead of Lowell so it's not unheard of... TerriM
Wow! That is definitely the path less taken :)
arliemaria
I am from St. Louis. Have you had your child tested? If you have the scores, PEGS is a great program (from what I've heard) and is a public fulltime PG program. My son is PG/2E with dyslexia. I am not sure we will enroll him at the moment. (We have some pressure from our family to enroll him vs. homeschooling.) They want tests scores that are no more than 12 months old with their application. https://go.lindberghschools.ws/Page/6323
TerriM
Thanks for the link. I will definitely look into it. We haven't had him officially tested using WISC. His recent scores have been high or 99%ile on ISEE and IOWA standardized testing, and he exceeded DYS's SAT score cutoff for his grade. Given the latter, I go ahead now and use the PG term, although I know that much of SAT testing mathwise is simply having seen the material which isn't necessarily an innate thing so much as an environmental thing. But his English score wasn't far off from his Math score. Edited July 26, 2017 by TerriM
TerriM
Sorry, for information, we might move when my son goes to high school. That said, elementary information could also be valuable for my other two kids who are younger. Edited July 26, 2017 by TerriM
TerriM
PS: Do you know anything about Ladue district? They seem to have multiple middle schoolers taking the AMC10 and doing well enough to make the honor rolls.
BarbecueMom
When I was at the state scholars academy in high school, there were Ladue students who had already completed Calculus 2 by the end of their sophomore year. Parkway schools would be another district I'd expect to see gifted math students and appropriate programs (especially West and Central high schools). Clayton as well. That said, I graduated high school over 15 years ago. I don't know much about city schools or private schools. Metro High usually makes the list of best high schools in the country, but I don't think it's STEM focused (could be wrong though). Our physician has a gifted child in Rockwood district and did not sound overly thrilled with their program. PEGS is the only other program I'm familiar with. I live a bit farther out, where we tend to have one day pullout programs or nothing at all. Hence, homeschooling.
GailV
Dd has friends in high school at Clayton, Parkway, and Rockwood (plus a handful of random private schools, such as Thomas Jefferson). Clayton has a good math program. I'm charmed by the fact that it's such a small district; dd thinks that's weird. We've heard that Parkway has good Physics, and is overall solid in math. It lacks in choir and performing arts.

Since we'd be moving in summer before school starts, Metro High (which I agree seemed to have less math classes than Ladue/Clayton) is out since it's a charter school. Applications must be from someone living in St. Louis due in January I think. Ok good to know. I didn't realize Clayton was smaller. I hadn't thought about looking at the Performing Arts offerings, but that's a good point. Kid is thinking of dabbling in Theater. I'll take a closer look at that for Parkway.

Could you share some more information? All I know is of bits and pieces from others who have had kids enrolled in PEGS (who then started homeschooling for various reasons). We don't live in Lindbergh, but I think our district participates. Sorry, I don't know much more than that. We're good with homeschooling and haven't entertained B&M schools yet, so I haven't looked into it. We'll see when my youngest gets a bit older. He's the one I'll probably need to have tested. ETA: I was in a fantastic program just like PEGS in elementary school, before moving to this area. Going from that to a regular classroom was jarring. The pullout program was awful. Putting gifted and quirky 2nd graders on a crowded bus with high schoolers... ugh. Edited July 27, 2017 by BarbecueMom

They placed well in the area High School Musical Awards, which is something that just started this year. But there are many (!) theater groups for kids in the area -- lots of people supplement what's available in their schools by participating in various community theater groups or performing arts classes. That's an easy interest to provide an outlet for. Finding the right gifted program seems trickier.
TerriM
I'm really disappointed that Pattonville HS doesn't have fencing as one of the sports.
AngieC
The Parkway School District has a program called Mosaics Academy. My son was in it for two years and loved it (and then we moved out of state, unfortunately). There are approximately 10 kids in each classroom and they ability group within the academy for math. The program continues through 8th grade. The student must have a 140 or higher fsiq or gai on a Wisc to be invited.
