The research involves evolutionary genetics and genomics of flour beetles and horned beetles, so this week she is learning "beetle maintenance"! Right now she is there about 10hrs/week and it isn't paid or for credit, but we are thankful for a prof who was willing to take a 16yo and allow her to get some lab experience during her last two years of high school. All they can do is dive in and see what they think. Dd is actually more interested in biomedical research at this point, but this prof gave her the opportunity on the recommendation of a mutual friend, and when we met with him he seemed like he will be really good for her to work with. My dd was already interested in genetics to some extent--she has pet mice and has researched the genetics of mouse coat colors and textures!
