Lawyer&Mom
We got back the scores for Dd 3.75 on the DAS-II. Doctor said Dd was focused, worked hard and therefore the results should be representative. Excellent. She does love one-on-one attention! Her cluster scores were all in the 99th percentile, with the exception of the spatial cluster, which was brought down to the 96th percentile by a 66th percentile sub-score on the copying section. ("She just didn't enjoy drawing the pictures." said the doctor. That's totally fine by me.) I'm tickled by her verbal comprehension sub-score of >99.9%. That's definitely my kid. Her composite score was 142 or 99.7th percentile. This feels right. I'm pleased. So what would you label this kid? Not PG. She didn't meet the DYS cutoff of 145 on any of her cluster scores. And she just doesn't feel PG to me. But is 99.7th percentile HG or EG? Obviously, this isn't a hugely important distinction, but I'd like to have a short hand description for my kid. What would you pick?
desertflower
I don't have an answer for you, but wanted to say that I'm glad you got good news. :)
SoCal_Bear
I think I would suggest holding off on a label and just know that she is gifted and look at retesting at 7 or 8. Under 4, this gives you a good baseline and idea, but it will not give you a true picture quite yet of where she is truly at.
quark
Congratulations! So happy that you received results that will hopefully be helpful to you in the next few years. I agree with calbear about holding off on labeling for now. However, I also understand how helpful it is to have some sort of shorthand to refer to when asking for resources/ help at places like gifted homeschooling forums. At the 99+ percentiles I would be comfortable using HG+. Honestly though, I have found it easy to not use any labels at all and instead just get to the gist of the matter with some background details. Good luck!
Lawyer&Mom
Thank you guys! We tested at 3.75 as part of a neurosych assessment for other issues. Honestly, I was surprised they were able to do a test this young where the results felt right. I'm totally fine with just calling her HG. I guess I just wanted permission to even go that high! We will definitely retest when she is older, I'd love to get more detailed results than the DAS-II is able to offer for this age group. EKS
Agreeing with quark, I'd call it (in my mind, for planning purposes) HG+. If her score was brought down by not wanting to copy pictures, then that subscore isn't representative of her true ability. She probably is PG by Davidson standards (but I have to say that IMO the Davidson definition is too broad--I think that a kid with an IQ of 145 can be PG, but that PG goes beyond a test score) and if you were to use a different test or test on a day when she was more into drawing, her score would probably reflect that.
