Recommendations for high school French?

Recommended Posts

I've been using WTM for 16 years now and used to rely heavily on the WTM forum each year for research and planning purposes. But the last few years I've been pretty set in my ways--until now. DD wants to learn French and while it's obvious there are zillions of options out there, I'm a little overwhelmed at the thought of sorting through them all. What is your experience with curricula for high school French that is DVD, software or online (not just workbooks) and won't break the bank. DD has passing acquaintance with French as well as a year of high school Latin.  Plan to study for 3 years.

Take a look at various offerings at Vista Learnjngs.

I don't think there is anything of the same quality published by homeschool publishers.

There is always French in Action, which you can get used and videos free online. You need audio files for it, but those are also available. I would supplement with more grammar if you chose this option.

We may go with BJU Press.  Right now they have their French and Spanish Classes(recorded) for either Online and Books OR DVD and books for $79!!  Just it is a dated program, but the language hasn't changed.  I have never used this. But just something I thought I would throw out there.

Blessings,

Brenda

I also asked on the WTM Facebook Page and got the following response.  Looks very promising...this was what I used in College.

Dali Cintra Bartharès From a college French major and current tutor: You can't beat French in Action. I have used it with much success with teens and adults. The videos are available free on-demand at learner.org. Books, workbooks and study guide are available used. You'll have to get your hands on the audio accompaniment as it is crucial, but it's the crown jewel of the method.

PM me if you decide to pursue French in Action and need audio files.

A sad update - audio files used to be available through a Middleburry site, but it looks like they blocked the access.

I bought this. It came in just under $100 with a free shipping + 20% coupon plus the sale price. We've finished all but the last two or three chapters of Breaking the French Barrier 1, and the first 20 (out of 30) chapters of this GC will be review.

I looked through the workbook and considered returning it before my disks shipped because so much of it is review, but I watched a later lecture and liked the professor. The course would probably move too fast for a first exposure to French, but it could fill the teacher component if one is needed along side something else.

If you've done Getting Started with French or CAP's elementary French course, it might work pared with Breaking the Barrier iBook or Workbook and/ or a grammar workbook and maybe Duolingo. The grammar and listening lab exercises included are brief, but seem to the point.

The teacher does recommend adding a grammar workbook, with three suggestions, including the ubiquitous Practice Makes Perfect book.

I think we'll use it for next year as a French 2 course pared with finishing Breaking the Barrier 1 and her Duolingo tree. I'll look at Breaking the Barrier 2 after she finishes all of that.
