what's your favorite board book?

I keep getting board books for my nephew... and I've now done it three times (shower, xmas, and when I came to visit) and now it's his first birthday and I can't remember which ones I bought him! Oops. So, um, suggestions... because I've bought my favorites, I'm sure, so I need someone else's favorites. Anything new and cool in the board book world?

We loved Jamberry. Never tired of reading it, though it was easily read a hundred times (or maybe hundreds of times). We also remained fond of Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb after many readings. Eric Carle's Brown Bear, Brown Bear... and variations were always fun. I love Chicka Chicka ABC (though I prefer the full original picture book. Goodnight, Gorilla. We're Going on a Bear Hunt is fun. Bear Snores On and the other Bear books were favorites.

Oooh, or you know what I liked? Each Peach, Pear, Plum and also the books by Alison Jay. ABC and Picture This got a lot of re-reads around here, and you know, I'm not usually a big fan of abecedarians. There's only so much you can do with that format.

Jamma jamma jamma jamma P! J!

But I think we can all agree Boynton is awesome. Since Farrar erred by not simply getting Boynton's entire oeuvre the first time around, she can't remember what books she has left to get. If she doesn't want to call and ask, that means she's got to get non-Boynton books.

Farrar, how about:

Round Like a Mooncake

Green is a Chile Pepper

Ten Tiny Babies

Whose Knees are These?

I'm really stretching my memory here!

My favorite board books all have great rhyme schemes and encourage children to participate in the reading. Board books were often read repeatedly, end on end, so the ones that were easy to read aloud with beautiful language really shone through!

Chugga Chugga Choo Choo

My First Book of Sushi (newer versions might leave off the last line, avoid those defective copies)

Bear Snores On

Sheep in a Jeep

Is Your Mama a Llama?

Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson

Freight train - no rhyming here, but the artwork is so simple and captivating!

Agree with Sandra Boynton, Jamberry, Allan Ahlberg, and Everywhere Babies

I love Julia Donaldson's rhymes but most of her books are too long for a board book and are better as soft or hardcover for older toddlers.

Favorites that I didn't like (in case you were curious)

We're going on a bear hunt - too long and too repetitive!

Little Blue Truck - rhyme scheme seemed amateurish

Guess how much I love you - too twee

Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy ~ Dodd

The Little Red Hen (lift the flap)       we can still purchase these new, as an individual title, here

Diary of a Wombat ~ French   (one he can grow into)

Let's Play, Alfie Bear ~ Waters

frog, where are you? ~ Mercer

Tom & Pippo Make a Mess ~ Oxenbury

Bertie & Small Books ~ Cabban

Ten in the Bed ~ Penny Dale

(& others ;) )

Our favorites:

The Very Hungry Caterpillar--the dc loved sticking their fingers in the holes; couldn't do this with the regular paper version of the book

Opposites and The Going to Bed Book by Boynton

Of Colors and Things by Tana Hoban--this one has no words, just pictures of things. I found it great for identifying colors, shapes, similarities/differences

I like the board book version of Mr. Brown Can Moo much better than the full length.

What about Hand, Hand, Fingers Thumb?  I don't know if there is a full length version of that book or not, but we have worn out at least 4 copies of the board book version.

This driving me crazy... did I get him Moo, Baa, La La La or Not the Hippopotamus? Did I buy We're Going on a Bear Hunt or Freight Train or Brown Bear, Brown Bear? Or Dear Zoo? Or The Going to Bed Book? Gah.

Amazon at least shows you which books you bought already....

Wrapping Paper Romp by Patricia Hubbell  (A wonderful book for birthday/Christmas about a baby/toddler who receives a gift and is far more interested in the wrapping paper and bows than what's inside the box.  After fifteen years, I can still recite this rhyming book, though much of the time I can't remember what I ate for lunch!)

My children also loved Silly Sally by Audrey Wood.

Oh, I adore Tana Hoban! But apparently Amazon doesn't have that one or any of her good ones (only the black and white ones) in board book. Drat!

There's a Mouse in the House by Richard Fowler.

Eta: same author has A Squirrel's Tale which is a close second.

Rose (8months) adores them both but so does the 5 yr old. And Dh and the teen boys enjoy a snicker or two over the search for nuts. 🙄ðŸ˜

I have my full length Hand Hand Fingers Thumb from when I was little. I love that book.

Woohoo. Thanks, everyone! I think I managed to hit like on them all. Board books are so cheap. I filled a cart (um, and got him new little rompers).

My Amazon history was no help. I bought board books for another new baby and I know I bought two for when I went out there at our little toy store/bookstore. So it was like online archaeology trying to figure it out.

Jamberry is probably my favorite of all time. I'm pretty sure I got him that one. I can still recite it though. And sometimes, like now, when berries are in season, I start saying, "One berry, two berry, pick me a blueberry, three berry, four berry..." and my children look appalled. As they should.

Yes, and I wouldn't get another board book version. In my experience, the board book versions of the Seuss and Seuss-esque early readers are poorly constructed. Just wait a couple of years and get the real version. That one will at least last.

Blue Hat, Green Hat is our ultimate favorite because everyone loves to yell Oops! with the crazy turkey

Doggies

The Big Dog and Little Dog series (Dav Pilkey)

Buenes Noches, Gorila (for some reason my kids thought Good Night, Gorilla was hilarious in Spanish)

No No Yes Yes (Leslie Patricelli)

Ollie the Stomper (Olivier Dunrea)
