tld
I'm studying 1600-1850 with my 2nd and 5th grader this coming year. It's almost 100% American history at this point. What other books focusing on stuff outside the U.S. during these years should I be including?

Starr
We are fans of SOTW. There's a book, audio recording, and an Activity Guide with maps, book lists, projects etc.You can use it however it fits in with your educational plan.

SebastianCat
Another vote for SOTW Vol. 3 or A Child's History of the World. Genevieve Foster's books like George Washington's World (and others) are also good for tying in events from all over the world to what was going on in the title character's lifetime. tld
We've done SOTW, but are diverging from that. I guess I'm looking for a few readers or read alouds that we can tuck into our American history focus and be like, "And while this was hpenning in America, look what was happening in China!" I guess I'm looking for a few readers or read alouds that we can tuck into our American history focus and be like, "And while this was hpenning in America, look what was happening in China!" The Genevieve Foster books (George Washington's World, etc.) sound like what you are looking for. GW's World is a single volume that covers worldwide current events when GW was a boy, a soldier, a farmer, the commander, just a citizen, and the president. I'd also recommend any of the historical fiction Read Alouds and Readers from Sonlight's Core C or Core D. Many of them are about other events in the time period you're interested in, and the content would be age appropriate. Incans, Aztecs, and Mayans might be too intense for your younger child, but Secret of the Andes, Walk the World's Rim, Peter the Great, Good Queen Bess, Red Sails to Capri, and White Stallion of Lipizza would be good.
73349
If you can get your hands on The Well-Trained Mind (most recent ed.), look at pages 166-175. It lists historical topics, important people, and some library books to look for. We used SOTW 3 this year with some other resources that were US-focused; if you just read aloud and don't do the AG, it's short enough to do as a supplement IMO. Here are some free timeline cards for 1492-1849, which I made partly to get some science/technology items to fit in there. If you want a list of artists and composers, here's what we did, not in strict chronological order: Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) Pachelbel (1653-1706) Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) Henry Purcell (1659-1695) Vivaldi (1678-1741) Rubens (1577-1640) Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669); cf. Art in Story Vermeer (1632-1675) Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863) Handel (1685-1759) J.S. Bach (1685-1750) Benjamin West (1738-1820) John Singleton Copley (1738-1815) Haydn (1732-1809) Mozart (1756-1791) Francisco Goya (1746-1828) (cf.
