bunk beds

I bought my boys' bunk beds from bunk bed king dot com because I love their designs (including twin over full with stairs) and adored their prices.  It was relatively easy to put together, even with our trundle-with-drawers, and it looked awesome in their space!

Turned out to be junkier than I anticipated.  I didn't expect it to be the best thing ever at that price, but I'll probably have to replace it by next year.  The trundle drawers have all fallen apart, and the whole thing shakes when my 10yo climbs up into his top bunk.  And he's a skin-and-bones 10yo.  It isn't on the verge of collapse or anything, but I won't want him up there much longer.

My daughters' bunk beds have held up much better (and they're much bigger people), but we got those second hand, and I have no idea where they came from. Wish I did!

Cargo Kids had the best bunk beds, and they had twin over full too. They sold to Pier One and then Pier One Kids shut down. BUT, if you look for Cargo Kids brand or Pier One kids brand used, you will get something quite solid.

I think the ones with steps seem safer for small kids.

I think if they can climb 2-3 rungs at the playground, a bunk with a ladder is no different. Or if they can't yet, then put them both on the bottom full with a head at each end until one is developed enough to climb 3'. It doesn't take long to master a ladder.

My 22 month old girl climbs up her brothers' bunk ladder. We had to remove a rung to keep her from climbing up all the time, lol! So you might be able to use the ladder types after all.

Either way be sure you check any bunk bed in person. We ordered one online and it was terribly flimsy.

Yes this. My 20 month old can and did climb a bunk bed ladder at the furniture store. I woukd feel safer with steps, but yeah maybe the ladder will be fine.

We have one with steps and drawers in the steps but DH built it. Is that an option for you? Ours is solid oak and looks amazing - buying one like it would be 8-10k.

I can't see your signature but if you have little ones you might not want them climbing. Injuries from top bunks are quite common in kids under 6.

I taught a 3 year old with a traumatic brain injury from a bunk bed fall. I, myself, fell out of the top bunk (despite safety rails on all 4 sides) and broke my collar bone, shoulder, and elbow....and have a permanent weird angle to that elbow.

Ugh.  I'm sorry.

We had a wonderful bunk bed set that let us set it up in 4 configurations:  twins, bunks, trundle, and one low/one medium in an L shape.  I used them ALL over the years.  That one had a ladder, and we didn't set up the bunks until ds was 7 or something.  The bunk configuration was my least favorite as it was hard to change the sheets.

I remember reading about the injuries, and being told not to do a bunk until age 6, but I don't think it was a ladder vs. stairs issue as re: safety, KWIM?  A kid can fall off either of those--but it was falling/jumping off the upper BUNK that was the main concern.

I wish I knew what brand those bunks were.  They were fantastic, and one of the hardest things for me to let go of in our downsizing.  But friends have them now, in the L-formation setup.  That was a great setup--you could sleep in the top layer (which was about my-chest high) and play or read on the lower layer, and there was a little cave under the top layer for hiding pirate treasure.

Ugh. Yeah, my kids are 5, 4 and 20 months.

We had a honey stair stepper twin over full by discovery world furniture. We bought it locally and got to climb all over it before buying.

I really liked it, alas we had to get rid of it because military sent us somewhere where the only room it would fit was the master and even if we set it up in there the ceiling was too low.

Also check Craigslist. When we moved to a permanent home we got another twin over full but with just a ladder. I found the older bunk beds to be more solidly built than what one can get in stores currently.
