I need help finding a German curriculum

My dd is starting 11th grade in the fall and wants to learn German as her 2 credits for foreign language. We did the Latin First Form series in elementary and middle school (all four of them), so I was hoping she would choose a Romantic Language. I don't know anything about German, so we need to do something without me. Are my options only Rosetta Stone or an online course? She prefers to do something more self-paced as she will have 2 demanding co-op courses this year, but I know she should get used to juggling her subjects before college. Any thoughts?

Oklahoma State University offers self-paced online high-school level German courses. I haven't personally used it, but it has been mentioned a lot here on the forum, so maybe you could search and see what you think of the feedback.

I remember seeing that TarynB, but wasn't sure how to find it. Thank you!! It figures that my husband is from Oklahoma (we now live in Tennessee), but is a University of Oklahoma fan and does not care for O State. I can hear it now if she takes this course!!! :lol:

Also, an FYI German is NOT easy!! Spanish is much easier with your dd's Latin background.

My ds does German with OSU and has really enjoyed it. He just started German 3 last week. The courses are self-paced. There are periodic quizes and tests, with required speaking tests from time to time. They have weekly skype sessions to go over material covered and so the tutor can answer any questions the student has. They are very responsive to emails if you have any problems or questions.

Hi Kim,

 

Would you mind sharing how much time your ds devotes to his class weekly? Has he used it from the beginning starting with German I?  Also, I've read lots of comments about intensity of other programs and I am just trying to gauge this one in terms of weekly assignments, teacher expectations, rapid pace, etc.. (e.g. craziness factor)? How intense is it?

For those of you who are still looking for a German course, you may want to consider DuoLingo as an option. My dd did the entire Duolingo German course after which she tested into German 3 at her university (UGa). DL could be used for CLEP study, homeschool high school credit, or prep for placement testing.

 

Dd did the entire program, then went back and reviewed. She felt DL delivered on their statement that the program is the equivalent of 2 semesters of college-level foreign language. It's also free. :)

We've been pleased with The Learnables for German. DD just finished German I and will be starting German II next school year.
