Research paper curriculum for a struggling writer

Recommended Posts

My daughter has something similar to dyslexia and has struggled with writing all along.  We have done a variety of curriculum and she has definitely improved but she will always struggle with a lot of output and smooth flowing writing.  She is now a Senior and really wants to learn how to do research papers in case she needs them for the future.  She gets less frustrated if it is laid out step-by-step and she can do it on her own for the most part without me in the middle.  We want something that takes you from deciding on a topic, to research and organize it, to citation (it would be nice to practice MLA and APA maybe), etc.

It looks like IEW's Research Paper may do that - will it or is there something better out there?

Thanks so much!

Not much in the way of reviews on Amazon, have you ever used it?

I have not used it, but I did purchase it. Unfortunately, I almost immediately loaned it out and have not yet received it back. I like the way it is broken into bite size chunks, so it doesn't make things seem so overwhelming.

ETA:

There are other editions as well. This one has more reviews.

Is the teacher guide necessary?

I didn't even know there was a teacher guide. Not sure of its helpfulness. However, when I went looking for that, I did discover that there is a sample of the student book. This might be helpful.

Rainbow Resources sells both the student and the teacher books.

by your response it seems it is not really necessary.

Thank you.

Just wanted to mention the resource "Teaching the Research Paper" from Analytical Grammar. I bought it from someone on the forums but haven't used it yet, but others may be able to comment. It looks very structured and incremental but I haven't, of course, used it.

I have used the AG teaching the research paper and it is very well done.  I also have listened to Dianne Craft's lecture on teaching composition to right brain learners. It is a very concrete/visual way to approach the pre-writing part of the research paper. I use both of these.

Now, I am using The Power in Your Hands by Sharon Watson to take it to a higher level with structuring and style. It includes MLA specifics. The website has downloadable PDF samples.

My high schooler has Irlen/SSS/VPD which people mistake for dyslexia but it's not the same. ;) Anyway, we're using IEW. Have you done any of the IEW's Student Intensive Writing Courses? They aren't light weight & will cover a lot more than you may imagine, & the continuation course as well for that matter. It's really helped my boy along. They do learn to write Essays & more. I've always shied away from IEW due to price & a few other things, but I'm actually really grateful we bit the bullet & ran with it.
