Cambridge Latin users question for ya :)

So I am debating what to do with my 9th grader next year.  He wants to focus more on his modern language but would like to keep up Latin but on a slower scale.  (maybe getting a credit Latin 3 over two years) He has completed Latin Alive I & II (online) and was hoping to switch to Cambridge since I have those books but not sure where to place him.  Any suggestions on what Unit to start him at?  I have Units 1-3 and was thinking Unit 3 since I already have it and wouldn't have to buy Latin Alive 3 so expensive!  Also if you have any idea of how credits would work in HS with Unit 3? or should I have him start with Unit 1 and go through quickly Unit 1 & 2 to get the story feel of it and then move on to Unit 3?  uhhh....

I don't know much about Latin Alive, but no Latin program can have enough reading, so I'd start him out reading from the beginning in Cambridge.  The early readings should be easy, but they are fun, part of a connected story, and he should be able to complete them quickly.  When he slows down, that's where you can pick up.  Typically, the first two Cambridge books are used together to complete one year of high schools Latin, then 3 and 4 are one year each themselves.

Here, the public schools give an entire years worth of credit for one book. However, I have been told that in the UK, one book is just a half year worth of credit.

Thank you!  I really like Cambridge too but he wanted to do online the past couple of years but I am not doing any online classes this year except the one modern language I can't teach.... Arabic!  :-P

Yep, I'd start from the start.  It helps with story continuity, if nothing else.  DS did Wheelock, then Oxford, then Cambridge.  Cambridge was probably the best of the three overall.

 

For credit, books 1&2 are indeed a single year, but 3 and 4 are one year each.  They get harder as you go along. 

 

There is also a Cambridge Latin website, where you can sign up for distance learning, group sessions, or private skype sessions.  They go straight through A-levels (similar to AP, but a bit more comprehensive).

A while ago I found something from the publisher saying that books 1 and 2 together are the first year, book 3 is the second year, and book 4 is the third year.

It's been a few years since my oldest girls used Cambridge, but if I remember correctly the recommended pacing as being adjusted for age. For junior high you would use one book a year, for high school one book a semester, for college all four books in a year.

The structure of the books has changed a bit. You can see it on their website: 1&2 for first year, 3 for second year, 4 for third year, and then working towards A-levels.
