AP Spanish Language and Culture

My dd's taking AP Spanish through PA Homeschoolers this upcoming year with Ray Leven.  While she obviously hasn't taken the actual AP class with him yet, she's taken Spanish 2, 3 and 4 with him over the last few years.  My dd has enjoyed his classes greatly.  She likes the high level of interaction during the class time and feels his expectations are very reasonable.  However, while he's never been anything but gracious and kind to me and my dd (he's actually been her favorite teacher for a number of years), I know some people have not meshed with his teaching style.

The only other AP Spanish classes I am aware of are through The Potter's School and Laurel Tree Tutorials.  TPS claims a very high success rate on the AP exam, something like an average score of 4.8, and I was almost tempted to switch my dd there because of those results, but when we watched the sample video, my dd couldn't bear to even think about changing because the class was taught in a very dry manner compared to what she is used to.  Plus, she just really loves Sr. Leven.  There is one person who has left reviews about Laurel Tree on the boards and her dd said the whole year was like one big test prep for the AP exam. From what I remember, her dd did very well on the exam, but did not particularly enjoy the class.  LT is much more expensive than the other two options and is self-paced from what I could tell.

Good luck finding a class that fits your dd and feel free to PM me if you want any more info about Sr. Leven's class.

My son worked with Sr. Leven for 2.5 years and thoroughly enjoyed his experience. Ds took Ray's AP class, but didn't take the exam because he already had the maximum transferable AP hours for his university and only a 5 would get any credit at all. Ds said that his college Spanish class was lacking in comparison to Ray's classes, in part because Ray offers so much focus on conversation.

I would agree with the above sentiment. Our experience with Ray was 100% positive.  He does have a dry sense of humor and will tell your student bluntly when they aren't meeting expectations.  His teaching style is very similar to the public school AP Biology teacher ds had, who once asked a student who was always 20 minutes or more late, "Why do you bother?"  Both teachers have been teaching AP for a long time and they expect students to take responsibility for their work (like a college class) with no excuses.
