Miller Levine Biology-Pearson

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if anyone has had a similar problem to the one I just encountered. I am trying to order the biology book with the 6 year license for my daughter and was told that they can only sell that to schools-public or private-but not homeschoolers. I am surprised by this since it is in the latest edition of WTM and it looks like other people have ordered this. Any thoughts would be great!

It used to be troublesome to get access to Pearson digital content.  I went through the process of signing a homeschool affidavit back before 2014 and got teacher access and a license to Mastering Physics.  Since then, they have become even more difficult to work with.  I remember threads in the last couple years where people where describing the brick walls they were encountering.

What I did for biology a couple years back is buy the course plan from Kolbe Academy, along with access to the virtual labs from Pearson.  The Kolbe biology options included tests and answer keys for assigned questions in the book.

I was very underwhelmed with the Virtual Labs.  This was what Pearson marketed to go along with the dragonfly edition.  It had a format that looked more like a Lego DS game than a lab, and it was sometimes glitchy to the point of being counterproductive.  We dropped the virtual lab content about 6 weeks in and shifted to wet labs and tabletop genetics exercises.

Hope you have better luck.

Thank you!! That is very interesting. We are looking at the Holt Biology now and thinking maybe that is the better way to go. I am just concerned about the lab component and getting it accomplished but if they were that bad on Pearson maybe we would've been stuck any way....

That website looks awesome! Thanks for sharing!! I am so stressed about high school....I need to take a deep breath. We ended up order Holt McDougal Science from Rainbow Resources. This might be a good supplement to make sure we get all the labs in.

I cannot see myself ever going through a publisher for teacher materials. They charge way too much as they are usually selling to people teaching to hundreds of kids and more. If I wanted to spend that kind of money, I would just purchase through a curriculum provider and get the syllabus and everything together, for less than getting the materials from the publisher.

Kolbe has a digital package for the newer book that you can purchase separately. You use their code and since it is registered through them, you do not have to go through the headache of trying to get access through Pearson. It is not the same thing as the virtual lab (which I did purchase but can not recommend).

The digital access has the online supports for the book, plus teacher resources with worksheets and assessments. Kolbe also sells their own tests and quizzes in paper format.

That may be the way it used to be but now even if you register as a homeschool they will not sell you this curriculum.

In my experience, Pearson can and will sell you any or all of the Miller-Levine books - student, teacher, labs, assessments (tests), etc. - just not the digital access subscription. I personally didn't feel like we could have used anything digital in addition to the books. Because it's such a full program with just the books, we wouldn't have had time to do it all with the digital stuff too.

I pulled some labs from here. http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/sci_edu/waldron/

I did have to decide which were worth doing as the cost of materials added up quickly. For example my osmosis lab was done with eggs not dialysis tubing.

We also did some dissections.

This site is great! Thank you for posting!

We are using Miller book with FundaFunda this coming school year. We may add some of these in if time allows.

I don't have any advice for you, but just wanted to say that it's too bad you can't get it because it really is a great program!  (Sorry to rub it in!)  We bought the student textbook with digital (and teacher) access directly from the company in 2011 (I think).  It was apparently just starting to get tricky for homeschoolers to get the digital access part then, but someone on this board had all the correct steps listed in order to register, and it worked perfectly for me.  We used the digital activities daily, and they were a great addition.

Yup.  We bought the book 2 years ago, from their website.  I went through the registration process, signed the affidavit as a HS'er, etc.  They sold me digital content, but I couldn't log in and access it.

After probably 15 hours on the phone w/ various people it became clear that:

1) they changed their policy over that summer and no longer will sell it to a homeschool, no matter how you're registered, etc.

2) they are super bad at communicating this kind of policy internally.

3) they need to fire 100% of their website dev's and hire anyone decent.  Seriously - it's dreadful.

Pearson has been directing eveyone to their HS'ing oriented website, but as far as can tell is totally useless.  There's almost nothing there.

In short - love the text, but Pearson has decided the HSing community is not worth dealing with.  Just buy it used and go from there.
