Planners... again

Recommended Posts

Every year I go through this when I realize again that the planners expire in June and I need them over the summer because we school year round. And every year, I look through the options and don't see anything better and end up with a Blue Sky Planner. But I can't seem to help myself. So before I hit buy, my absolute perfect student planner would have...

* masculine or gender-neutral cover options

* equal space for weekdays and weekend days

* no subject dividers

* a space for weekly goals or big picture things

* a two page month spread with a space for monthly goals

* pages for keep track of reading

* pages for big picture yearly goals

* a few extra pages or homeschool centric pages like for tracking activities and things like that

* not be something I have to print and bind myself

Anyone? Should I just buy the Blue Sky ones? This year, the cheaper ones they have at Target seem to be much more limited, unfortunately, though I suppose they might pop up next month.

Plum Paper Planner has many layouts to choose from, along with 2 sizes 7x9 and 8.5x11 (I think). You can choose a cover, add on extras like note pages. The paper is really nice. The downside is that it is going to be more expensive than blue sky.

I am using Simple Plan this year, which I think would meet a lot of your wants, but it is feminine and has "notes" instead of Saturday/Sunday. The thing I really, really like about it is the yearly planning.

I second the Bullet Journal. I use a smaller journal for myself, and am going to buy a larger journal to plan for next year. (This year I used a regular teacher's planner, like I used when I was teaching high school. It worked okay, but I would like to add some other things and a BuJo will be better for this.)

A Simple Plan looks good, and they have covers that aren't girly, but the weekend thing is a dealbreaker. And it's too religious for us, I think. When I first looked at the student version, it seemed like most of the religious content was stuff that was on some of the extra yearlong pages and I was like, I could just rip those out. But there are also religious parts to every weekly page, I think. Honestly, if not for the fact that it doesn't have weekends, I might do it anyway. The price is right and it's not like it has religious instruction throughout. But... we routinely do school on weekend days. I need those in the planner.

The bullet journal thing seems like a lot of work on my part getting it going. I think I want something already done. Part of the niceness of a planner is the reminder to do the things it's telling me (or, the kids) to do.

I looked at Plum Paper before and I balked at the price. Like, IIRC, it was going to be something like $45 for each kid to get what I had in mind. I'll pay a little more, but most planners are less than $20.

I think I've saved several planner threads.  I'll try to post them when I get back home.  I wish there was that perfect planner out there for our boys that didn't cost an arm and a leg to create.  I just found out that you can create your own Blue Sky planner, but they aren't cheap.  I found the perfect weekly layout that I love in a Blue Sky teacher's planner, but I want it for my boys, not for me -- LOL.

BTW, you don't live too far from me.  I've always thought it would be fun to meet you in person and have our twin boys meet -- LOL!

I just looked at that one today! I love the way the goals are laid out. But the weekly layout with no room on Sunday is a dealbreaker. And I don't need the time agenda thing at all, which is also has.

It's crazy how much planners are!! If you like the rest of a cheaper one you could always use white out tape or a label over anything you don't like on a section and repurpose it ......it'd be work, but it might save you $$$. Unless you have a perfectionist in the house. Then that would probably be a no go. The label would drive them crazy. :)

I thought about doing this with Washi tape -- LOL.  It would only be on104 pages...

I do have a perfectionist, but he would not be bugged by white out (or washi tape, which is a great idea!). That's basically what we do already, it's just that it's limited.

I saw the "Happy Planner" at Michael's last night. I liked that you could customize it yourself by buying extra sets of pages. It was expensive, but 40% off made it more in line with what I'd like to pay. It was a bit on the large side... but I'm guessing I could make it smaller by removing things. Maybe. The covers were a bit girly. Sigh. Men need to plan too!

I haven't seen the Simple Plan Student Planners in real life, but the mom planner is a huge. It's probably 2 inches thick.

I saw the Happy Planner at Michael's last night, too. I wanted to go take a look but someone was really studying them, and I couldn't get a peak. Maybe it was you! ðŸ˜

The Simple Plan student planners were strangely hard to get a decent look at. But I know I found an online review of them when I first saw them. It was much thinner than the mom one.

Ha! I only spent a few minutes with them. But that would be funny. In a suburban downtown with an alliterative name around 8 pm? :D

Have you looked at My Student Logbook? They have undated planners with columns for Monday-Sunday. You write your checklist on a fold-over flap that you can reuse for several weeks, and then tuck the page with the columns into it, and check each item as it's done that day. The facing page is blank and could be used for any kind of list that you want (weekly goals etc...). In the high school videos, I know I've seen an activity list page, but I haven't seen 2-page spreads for monthly goals. You could use a tab divider and mark a page 4 weeks or so after the start of the month and list goals on a blank page. I'm not sure if there's a "reading list" page--you might have to email to ask about that. They have cover options that would work for boys.

We tried the Simple Plan planners last year (me and dd both). They're just too darn big. Even the student one. It was also limited on subjects- since we do block I need more than five or six slots.  I gave it a go, but it fizzled and sat unused. I much prefer the thinner planners. I don't need all of the extra fluff and sections. If you have a Mardel near you they have them in store usually and you can get a good look at them.

Michael's has those planners on sale a lot, so that would be a good option maybe. If you needed more sections, you could just wait for the next sale then. I've seen them on sale at least 3 times since January.

I have a Happy Planner.  Which side do you say is large? the BIG size (8.5x11) or the Classic?  If you mean thick -- you can buy larger rings or yes, take some stuff out. There has been some complaints  about them being too girly. But if the only problem is the cover, then I recommend a custom cover!  I purchased a babylon 5 one on Etsy based on this Dr. Who one:

We just use the Target planners for summer, although we might just use it for summer + fall this year and start a new one in January.

On the right side of the weekly page, where there is room for lists, I make the the top box (or two) Saturday and the second box (or so) Sunday and start the to-do list in the third box. Let me know if you need a visual.

I print our Google Calendar for the next few months in "portrait", trim and glue into the front.

We have this one for fall: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/144131573X/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

We liked/ used this this year: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003FMRS46/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have a print out from Novare's yahoo group that I like for making my lesson plans. It's nothing special (a 2-semester weekly grid with days off grayed out), but I like how it's set up.

ETA, Both of the linked planners have plenty of notes pages for logging reading, field trips, etc. Both also have grade book grids.

For the equal size for all days, you could sub-divide the notes section vertically on the two ones I linked above and voila, Saturday and Sunday... not sure if you could put your goals where the subjects are written in?

Only other drawback is that even the longest one I linked only has 45 weeks, which is why we use the dollar bin ones from Target in the summer.

Good luck with your planner hunt!

I also can never seem to find exactly what I want. I like Order out of Chaos student planner better than most.  But it does not totally meet your needs list. Has Sat and Sun, but not equal space.  Has area that can be either time or subject as user chooses.  All other things you list it has, or has enough room for you to do that even if not a dedicated spot.  Has a sturdy back pocket where hand out calendars or other lists can be put.

I wish these two could have a baby planner with both of this inside. It would be perfect.

(except not the pink cover one... I don't know why Amazon didn't have a seller with the brown - they have it other places though...)

I may buy them both and duct tape them together or something.

I just shopped yesterday for a new planner/calendar and found a small selection. I bet there will be many more options once the school supplies hit the main displays late July. I read the OP's original post and thought to myself 'that's what I was just saying to myself yesterday'!

I used 2017 Moms Manager 12 Month Spiral Engagement Planner https://www.amazon.com/dp/1624388205/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_wzRozbRBNSHVB this past year and liked it a lot. Not for Homeschool assignments but for a family calendar.

That's so close! Other than it being a yearly instead of an academic year one. Ooh. Maybe I'll get it anyway though.

Or I'm ordering something Korean, because those are all so lovely. Choices, choices.

Well you're going to have to post whatever you order because I keep coming back here everyday to see if you found something.  :p One can never have enough cool planners to contemplate buying.

Ha!

Well, I decided to go with one of the Korean ones. Good layout for the weekly, monthly, and extra blank pages. Covers not too girly. Hopefully they'll be big enough - that was my one hesitation - that they might be on the small side. But otherwise, I think they're going to work well. And if they do, since they're undated, I think I'll order more now.

Definitely some for a running list of books read. We do things like goal setting, so some space for that. I'd like them to get better at when they do their self-assessment write ups and I think keeping track of some things would help them be more autonomous when we do it. I'm going to think about what all that should be.

The options were not matching the picture! So I'm not totally sure, but I put in the notes that I'd like that one. As long as we don't end up with the most flowery two, it's fine. And I thought I'd order some exciting stickers for the inside. Maybe something beloved by the children like... Gravity Falls or Dungeons and Dragons or something. And some general holiday ones. In the fall when we start for reals, I can include them in the first day of school box and let them decorate them.

I wish the planners ended in August and started in September! This end of June thing sneaks up on me every year and doesn't mesh at all with when I like to buy stuff.

They're thin. I almost bought them and combined them with some shiny, pretty duck tape.

I ended up order the Teacher Planner linked up thread and the Small monthly planner (showed up as an add-on item on Amazon). For a year or so I bought the Blue Sky one, too. Before that I had one I really liked, but I think they discontinued it because I could never find it again. I like stuff with lines and adequate space to write down what we did or plan to do in class. For just remember events I can use the monthly one.

By "Simple Plan" do you mean a basic planner with no added extras?  I'm not finding anything called "Simple Plan" on the Plumpaper.com website.  Would you have a link to what you mean?

The main things that keep me from successfully "bullet journaling" is the need to design/draw the page layouts myself, and not having a good way to break out specific things I need to track together.  The Plum Paper stuff mentioned up-thread actually looks like something I might be able to use to journal certain things together, and since I wouldn't have to draw the page layouts myself or date the calendar boxes or pages (I HATE undated!) I might actually use it a bit more often.

Now, if only I hadn't already invested some $$ in planners for the kids and me, and if only the Plum Paper things weren't quite so costly.  I imagine a well-constructed-assembled-to-suit planner would be well worth that cost, though.

I am bookmarking that website, though, for future reference.
