German Book recommendations

Recommended Posts

As I plan for next year, I'd like some help coming up with German books that I could use. The main things I'm looking for (though I'll probably remember more later!) are something like the following that I could read aloud to my early elementary aged kids (with preschoolers perhaps listening in):

1) A handbook of nature study

2) A poetry anthology

3) An easy history storybook and/or a collection of myths from a variety of cultures

For #3, I already have audio versions of Eine Kurze Weltgeschichte fur junge Leser and various Sagen by Dimiter Inkiow, but my kids aren't focusing on those very well (they'd rather read their own books in the car than listen to audiobooks). Would those be good if I had a hard copy and just sat down and read them for 10 minutes at a time with the kids?

I finally found what I feel like is a great German Bible, and it's made me really excited to see what other good things I can find! (We went through several Bibles that were either too condensed - I'd like something more than 20 pages long - or had blech illustrations that my kids did not like at all before I found this one that has beautiful illustrations on every page with the perfect amount of text and is almost 300 pages long - so it's enough for us to read year round!)

FWIW, these are just intended to be fun readings that we can do together and talk about. We already read lots and lots of picture books that are more at my younger kids level, but I realized I haven't been doing a good job keeping up with their listening ability and maturity with German read alouds as I have in English. It's just easy to grab a slightly harder English book from the library without spending any money, but I have to be much more intentional about buying German books.

I have "Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten und andere beliebte Tiermärchen" by Alena Benesova. It has short fables from various cultures. In the index, it lists the origin of each story. It's older (mine is from 1985) but if you Google it, there are used book sites that sell it.

Thanks! I'll check that one out as a start!

I use www.amazon.de to get an idea what title might be available.

They have lovely bilderbucher about componists with an cd.

They have many books aout myths and sages :)

For 'handbook of nature study' I just would use some fieldguides. Realizing that flora&fauna might be different compared to where you live.

Instead of Poetry you might want to consider German Folksongs.

I use amazon as well! Just wondered if anyone could offer further suggestions to narrow down the search. The fieldguides are a fun idea. We already learn lots of folksongs, but I suppose we could probably just learn more! :) My kids do enjoy actual poetry, though, so long as it's "kid-friendly". :)
