bibsandmegs
Does anyone have a resource they use to get ideas for summer reading for their children? I'd like to keep them reading, with an occasional "book of substance" rather than just fun thrown in. I've been looking at the Sonlight catalog for ideas. I'm just wondering if there is some other good resource out there that I'm missing. Thank you so much! Enjoy summer!
SKL
I've been looking for the same thing for my kids going into 6th grade Here are some ideas I've found that I will use to some extent: Middle school book club at the library: one substantial book per month. Books-a-Million has a list of books from which kids have to choose (read 4 books from the list) in order to win a small prize. The list seems interesting. Barnes & Noble also offers a list which you can find online, but they don't require that you choose from their list in order to win a prize. I did a search on amazon.com for summer literature and did find a bunch of good books. For my daughters, I chose the following books, many of which have summer themes: Summer of the Swans, Summer of the Monkeys, Strawberry Girl, Where the Red Fern Grows, The Incredible Journey, Caddie Woodlawn, Hatchet, My Side of the Mountain, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, Island of the Blue Dolphins. (Penderwicks, but we already read that one.) Also recommended but not for my kids due to the sensitive nature: One Crazy Summer (Rita WIlliams-Garcia) and Bridge to Terabithia. Arcadia
For my oldest boy who is a bookworm, I am using the list link below as a fall back. He has read many on that list already over the years. https://mseffie.com/AP/APtitles.html

daijobu
Check out the websites of local schools. Many of them post their summer reading lists online. You can also google "summer reading list 8th grade" and lots of random school lists will pop up.
