Amazon textbook rentals

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else been returning their rented Amazon textbooks?  I just mailed dd's history book and received this email in response:

"Thank you for returning your rental of A History of Modern Europe: From the Renaissance to the Present (Second Edition) (Vol. One-Volume) (v. 1).

We were not able to accept your return for the following reasons:

Binding Damaged

You have been charged $39.13 for the item. We will return the item to you within 30 days and it is yours to keep."

Dd tells me it's a heavy paperback book and by the end of the year, pages started falling out.  I believe it was used when we received it, and I would call that poor quality binding, but I suppose that's the way it goes.  The other 2 books I've returned so far seem fine.  I just took a Campbell's biology (huge and heavy!) to the UPS store today, fingers crossed.

Anyone else having trouble with textbook rental returns to Amazon?

And PS, if you are signed up for Renaissance History at WTMA next year, and want a free book, LMK.

wow, interesting. are you a prime member? if so, i might get them on the phone or live chat and see what you can do. we did rent a textbook from amazon - but have decided to pay to keep it so don't know if we'd had any trouble with it. though ours was really new, so no binding issues.

Wow. We've rented from them more times than I can count, and we've never had a problem like that. I hope you can get it worked out!

We've been renting for years and have never had a book not accepted. However, I did have dd send one back immediately after it arrived because I felt it was not in an acceptable condition and did not want to be charged for it at the end of the term.

Yikes! We just returned dd's first rental. As of now, we've only received the standard confirmation that they know it was shipped back to them. I'll update if we get an unexpected response.

Dd's textbook was in rougher condition than I expected. We had it shipped to dd on campus, so I didn't see it until it came home & wish she'd mentioned its condition to me earlier... 😶 So- we shall see.

Sometimes the prices I see on Amazon for a one semester (4 months) rental are more than what I can buy the textbook for, "Used Good".  I would assume that when you rent they do not send you a Brand New book.

That's correct, it is a used book when we receive it.  I will take a little more careful to compare prices next time.

Not only compare prices between a Rental and a Purchase, spend a couple of minutes, and click on the individual "Condition" listings. Begin with "New" and work your way down to "Used-Good".   Sometimes you can get a copy in better condition for less money.  Sorry you had this bad experience with the rental!
